My partner bought me a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I was wondering if someone could give me some advice as to how to proceed. I have Acronis True Image Home 2010 and the Plus Pack both latest builds. Would I be better:

1) Clean Install of the Ultimate Version and Installing all applications and then configuring all their settings.

2) If there is a way Clean Install of the above and then migrating all programs and settings (I don't know how at this stage).

I know how to install the operating system so I don't have any problems there. It's more of a time and stability thing. If I could clean install and then transfer over my programs then I would be quite happy.

If you have the time it's always best to do a clean install. Not only does it remove all of the "junk" that you've accumulated but it also allows you to explore setting up the operating system once again. Since you're on these forums, I highly suggest you take a few hours to read through some of the threads that involve clean installs, good programs and other info.

For Example:

I recommend that you turn off any and all Windows Features you don't use including Aero.
Download CCleaner, Defraggler.
Turn your System Restore down to a tolerable level.
Use either Avast 5 Free or Microsoft Security Essentials
Use Comodo Firewall (Free)
Use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Install other programs such as: Partition Wizard, Firefox, VLC, etc.

There are other things to do as well, if you want more tips, they're abundant.

If you don't want to do a clean install, you can use the program Windows Easy Transfer. You can find it in All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.

Thanks for the response. I agree with you thats it's better to clean install everything. I thought I would maybe shortcut it if there was a way to clean install the operating system and then transfer over the programs and settings. I have programs like Adobe Master Suite CS4 which takes a good while to install on it's own. If there really isn't any other way apart from windows easy transfer then I will set aside a day at some point to do the above.
