Solved Moving files from old drive

Greetings,
My mother in law had her towers motherboard die. I was able to grab the SATA drive out and pop it in to my external SATA USB adaptor and I can see it as a G drive. I am trying to move over the documents but keep getting a permission denied error. This tower was running XP. Is there a way to force the copy or change the permissions so it work.
Just want to salvage her documents and pictures.

Hello Ed,

It sounds like you may need to take ownership of the G drive, and set the G drive's permissions to "Allow" your user account "Full Control" before you will gain access.

I gave that a go but still get a permission error. I see that under properties the files are 'hidden' I wonder if this is effecting the problem.

Have you already tried taking ownership and applying permissions to the folders and their contents for the document and picture files?

Holy cow... It worked once I paid attention. Since the drive was originally a C drive with Windows it would not work. But after realizing that I just wanted to take ownership of "mydocuments" it worked. I want to burn these a DVD for her to use now. Do I have to adjust permissions again so she can access them?

It depends on where you saved them to and if she already has access to that location or not.
