I use the MS Wireless Keyboard 1000 and MS Wireless Optical Mouse 2000 with my HP HDX 16t (dual core) notebook running Windows 7 x64.

I installed both Intellipoint 7.0 and Intellitype 7.0. About 50% of the time when I boot, the mouse driver fails ("This device cannot start"). I have to manually uninstall the driver and then search for new devices. It re-installs the driver and then the mouse works fine.

Windows update had 3 recent files--update to Intellitype and to Intellipoint I think. Also a MS Mouse and Keyboard Detection Driver (USB), Driver ID = 20305405. It fails to install after many attempts. I've tried turning off all start-up programs without success. Error code 80070103. I think if this could get installed it would end my mouse driver problem. Any help?

Try uninstalling Intellipoint and Intellitype. Reboot, and let Windows find the drivers automatically. You shouldn't even need those installed.

Mouse driver fails

Did uninstall. The driver that comes with Win 7 works better, but still fails about 1 boot in 4. Also, I lose functionality of the mouse (I like to program the wheel button as double-click) when not using Intellipoint.

I'm going to guess you didn't have problems under Vista. I'd guess that either the drivers for your keyboard/mouse aren't working right (doubtful, since this is Microsoft equipment) or the drivers for your laptop's chipset are to blame. Have you installed any Windows 7 drivers for your laptop? Also, has HP released any BIOS updates for your laptop? Did you run Vista x64 previously?

The 80070103 error usually means that the driver you are trying to install is less compatible that the one you currently have installed. Here's a brief synopsis from Microsoft:

Windows Update error 80070103

I did run Vista 64 previously. Had a different wireless keyboard and mouse (Logitech) which finally died. Replaced it with the current MS kb and mouse. Am running latest BIOS from HP. It bugs me that IP 7.0 and ITT 7.0, which are supposed to be specific for Win 7 just are not working in 64 bit. I have a separate partition booting 32 bit Win 7, and they work fine on that partition.

What's the filename for the IP, and what's the filename for ITT?

Intellipoint for Win 7.0: IPx64_1033_7.00.260.0.exe

IntelliType: ITPx64_1033_7.00.260.0.exe (Boots and works flawlessly--it is just IP that screws things up in 64 bit)

Solved! (I think...)
After uninstalling IP and ITP, ver. 7.0, Windows automatically installed drivers for both.
I then ran "SFC.EXE /scannow" which found and repaired some irregularities. From then on, mouse worked on all boots. Ran Windows update, and it automatically installed IP and ITP (same version that I had downloaded previously) and so far, all boots leave my mouse working. Whew.
