MSE 2 Final Released!

Installing MSE 2

I have just downloaded MSE 2 and one of these days will get up the courage to install it. Should I install it over my existing MSE or uninstall MSE and make a complete new installation of MSE 2?

Thank you.

I just installed it over the top of my existing install and had no problems.

Graemzy: I am using it with a realtime (licensed) version of Malware Bytes without any conflict, but I can't say whether MSE would not conflict with other realtime programs.

So how's the network inspection tool? Can anyone show a screenshot of it? I won't be able to see it until later tonight when I go home and update. :D
There is not much to look at. It's a Sub-setting in Settings.

As far as I can tell it's either on or off.

A different opinion.
  • Network Inspection System
    • Attackers are increasingly carrying out network-based attacks against exposed vulnerabilities before software vendors can develop and distribute security updates. Studies of vulnerabilities show that it can take a month or longer from the time of an initial attack report before a suitable security update is developed, tested, and released. This gap in protection leaves many computers vulnerable to attacks and exploitation for a substantial period of time. Network Inspection System works with real-time protection to better protect you against network-based attacks by greatly reducing the timespan between vulnerability disclosures and update deployment from weeks to a few hours.

I installed it over my existing MSE on this win7 x64 machine as well as an XP x32, then rebooted and updated both. The only difference I noticed is that the win7 x64 pc has a small added delay between login and availability of the desktop - around 10 sec (it's noticeable since previously the moment I logged in it only took 2-3 seconds before I could click the Start button and immediately get the menu). Not a big deal, but still a slight annoyance. The XP machine logs in slow anyway so I didn't notice if it also got slightly delayed.

MSE itself works fine, same as always. Updated and scanned no problems.

Edit:
Well whaddya know, after another - later - reboot, the delay's not there anymore. Huh.

Even on a netbook with 1GB of RAM, this wouldn't be an issue, would it? I can't think of anything lighter-weight to run than MSE....lol.

Well - my full blown ESET 4.2.40.0 AV - which is about a hundred times more full featured than MSE will ever be is only using 31MB as I type...so yes - there are a number of much "lighter" alternatives out there....

Regardless of RAM installed - 60-70MB of RAM in use for a background process like this - in an app that provides a LOT less functionality is disappointing. If it offered the same feature set - I wouldn't comment...the price is right tho :)

There are plenty of alternatives to MSE which are actually lighter (RAM-friendly), fully-featured and more effective.

Lightest Antivirus Test

Performance Test Anti-Virus
Whole Product Dynamic Test

Also, there were people who sent feedback on MSE's MS Connect beta page regarding the product's functionality, interface, etc. They shared ideas in order to make MSE 2 a better product but it seems that MS didn't listen. :(

Especially at 7:40 into the presentation when he says the version of windows he was using was not registered.

With the validation process needed to use MSE he was lucky he was able to use it at all.

Maybe he had to do some hacking to get it to run.
Maybe that is why he was having problems with it

Excuse me now, I'm going to run some scans to make sure I'm not infected after watching that....

MSE 2.0

MSE 2.0 does not tell me when a schudle scan has started

I know infact that 1.0 came with a pop up, i was wondering if there was a way to enable a a pop up in 2.0

At 1st i throught i missed it because i was away at the computer, but today i was here and it started at 11.45am and did not come with a pop up.

Also is there a way to make it run at 12.00 Noon on the dot not 12.10 not 11.45?

The process hung an explorer window of a virtual drive where I'd mounted a self-made ISO using Alcohol 120%. When I killed MSE, explorer managed to show the disc and I could view the tutorial videos on it.

No other issues with other discs, or other programs. Strange. Works ok otherwise, and the image in question mounts fine on other machines.

Edit:
Back on-topic, I didn't notice a popup when the scheduled scan ran, but I had other windows up and wasn't really paying attention to the machine.
