MSE: definitions current, but still "potentially unprotected"??

I just noticed that I have the orange "potentially unprotected" flag in my system tray, even though MSE is supposedly up to date. See the date and time info in the pic.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I've seen some update confusion in cases where I did an intervening System Restore, but I have not done one recently.

Going from memory, I thought you didn't get the orange flag until about 48 hours since the previous definition update?

You haven't done a scan in a week or so. It is a reminder.

Run a quick scan at least and it will be happy.
Mine does it once a week if I don't run a scan.

I have a schedule set to scan every Sunday. This orange flag started in the last 12 hours somewhere.

I assume my scheduled scans are taking place as scheduled, HOWEVER: I did not begin using scheduled scans until a month or so ago when I upgraded to version 2 of MSE. Prior to that time, I NEVER did scans and NEVER had this symptom. I wouldn't go orange unless auto updates had not occurred for circa 48 hours.

It may well go away if I scan, but I'm not really trying to make it go away---I'm trying to understand why the orange flag now.

More info: just noticed my last scan is shown as 12/26/10---which I cannot explain. At any rate, the flag went orange only in the last few hours, despite it being 16 days since the last scan. And despite scanning having no connection to flag color based on my prior experience.

Review your Settings.
As Mike said, do a scan and it should go away.

Here are 2 screen shots, but I'm not sure they are pertinent.

As I stated, my personal experience is that the flag has no connection to scans---the flag is connected to the time since the last definition update.

The larger question now is---how come no scans since 12/26/10, if you can believe that date?

That is over seven days.

One of the updates might be messed up. You can check that in Windows Update list. That is where all the MSE updates are listed along with Win Updates. Control Panel>Windows Update> View Update History.
Check the MSE updates and make sure they were marked "Succesful" since 12-26-10.

There were new definitions 1/12/2011, i have mine set to run scan daily at 9 am. It never disrupts anything because it runs in background.

Here is the screen shot. There was a definition update failure on Jan 8, but all since that date were successful--including the most recent update only 24 hours ago on Jan 11.

I am wondering if the flagging issue is connected to yesterday's Windows Update---which were unrelated to MSE as far as I know?

The newest definition is 195.3768.0

1-8 is the problem.

Delete it and then update again.

Click the yellow circled in left picture.

Right picture highlight bad update then click uninstall at top. Run Windows Update it will make a restore point that way and download the update again.

Yeah, I may be auto-updated to 195.3768.0 at any time and that may make the flag go away---although that wouldn't explain why the flag now. I've never seen the orange flag when definitions are only 24 hours old.

Nor can I explain why my auto-scanning has failed---not that it's connected to the flag.

Until this incident, it had always been seamless---autoupdates every 24 to 48 hours and constant green flags, even with scanning turned off completely.

You know the old saying in computing nothing is forever when it's auto, then we just fix it and go on and hope it lasts till the next time.

Once the bad one is replaced he can reset the auto and it should be fine.....until next time 1Bowtie.

See my list of updates I can uninstall below, sorted by date from current date. Nothing near Jan 8. In fact, I don't see MSE virus definition updates at all in that list.

Do they show up on your list????

I never realized they showed up in the listing page but not on the uninstall page.

They hid them somewhere!!!!

Well.........offhand, I wonder if deleting it would have helped? If the failure had broken a link in the chain, you'd think all later definition updates would have failed also--but they succeeded. So, I'm not sure if this is the culprit.

I went to Windows Updates manually and see they have a new definition update available. I refuse to download it manually as I have never previously had to request updates--they just seamlessly arrived through my modem and were installed.

So, I am going to wait a day or two and see if I am eventually fed the most recent update and if that eliminates the orange flagging problem.

Then I presumably have to delete my so-called scanning schedule and make a new one---or maybe better yet just not do any auto-scanning at all--which is what I did for a year or more, without any incident.

Click on the "Home" tab and post a screenshot. There should be a reason why your PC is potentially unprotected.

Here is some new info:

My definitions were auto updated in the last 2 or 3 hours to 1.95.3860.0, dated today, Jan 13.

The orange flag remains. The "home" tab of MSE says "You haven't run a scan on your computer in a while. This could put your computer at risk".

In spite of me having never done a scan for a year, without getting that message. And in spite of having a scanning schedule set up to scan weekly since I upgraded to version 2 about 6 weeks ago. The schedule apparently has been ignored since no scan has been done since 12/26/10.

So, I'm going to uninstall and reinstall.

What I don't know is if this new version 2 of MSE is designed to throw an orange flag if you simply choose not to scan----the earlier version did not throw a flag. I don't know if I'm getting the flag due to a bug or corruption or if the app is working correctly.

When I reinstall, I'm going to turn off scanning entirely and see if the orange flag recurs.
