I am on eightforums, just don't have eight to talk about. It's all the same under the covers :)

Hi again,

So just to confirm after I run the following sequence my hard drive is wiped and a fresh win8 install should be safe?

Diskpart
lis dis
sel dis 0
lis dis

clean
exit
exit

- Also, good tips on the Win8 product. I'm not worried about having a win7 shell. I have two other laptops and one of them runs win8, I'm pretty familiar with using that OS. I've just been lazy with moving my other machines over to win8 lol. I guess this incident was just a good push to get me to flip over. I'll be doing the update over the weekend.

Thanks,
-Steve

It's good to confirm.

Yes, with an amplification on running the Command Prompt as administrator.

You have Win7 install media created using the ISO.
You might consider creating Asus recovery discs before wiping the drive. There might be some utilities worth keeping (not on my HP there weren't!)
>> you can usually download them from the OEM if you really want them.

When you purcahse the Win8 license you won't have to worry about the OEM bloat (Asus, HP, DEll... they all add stuff that really isn't necessary) - buit if you became attached to one or two you can still get it from Asus.

You might want to check your machine's download page to see if it offers Win8 drivers or Win8 Asus utils.
You might want to download the ethernet card driver (Win7 is fine if no Win8). That way you can hardwire inot you router and do Windows Update (WU) - let WU supply all the drivers it can and backfill the DevMgr :warn:warnings.

That's all I can thiink of right now, except to say you're welcome.

Bill

Thank you everyone for helping me identify the issue. As the solution I'll be installing Win8 over the weekend and starting fresh. I hope it's a fairly simple install.

I would not have been able to save my data if it wasn't for places like this. UsernameIssues, ICit2lol & Slartybart I really do appreciate your time and advice. You guys are quick to respond, extremely professional and highly knowledgeable. You're great at breaking down complex directions into something that I or someone else could easily understand and follow.

I'm not sure how this forum runs, who owns it, if your paid for your support or any backend stuff like that. From what I gather you are all offering free support and if that's true...hats off to you. It's really good to see people who are out there honestly helping people and giving their time to assist and help. This forum stands out for me and I wouldn't hesitate to come back in the future. I've been to other tech support forums and I've never had such great help as I did on sevenforums.com

I can't say thank you enough, I've restored my system to where I can pull off the small data I needed, I have a plan to freshly install a new OS and most importantly, I was educated along the way. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Sincerely,
-Steve

As far as I know, the forum is made up of volunteers. No particular rewards other than the satisfaction of helping others, learning stuff and the friendship of those one "meets" here.

When your computer would not boot, I posted to an area that calls for help. ICit2lol & Slartybart came to my rescue and yours. We all have our areas of experience (expertise?) and getting to your data in that state is not one of mine... so I stepped back.

I've gotten data from drives with Ubuntu and Kaspersky's tools before. I've just never encountered a system where the drive did not show for those two tools. They get to the data pretty much the same way.

Looking back, I regret not asking you to backup your data while it was easy to get to. And to change passwords. Now if my old/senile brain can just remember that for the next thread like this :-)

Steve,

You're more than welcome.

The only monetization on Sevenforums is from a small amount of advertising when members are not logged on or visitors read through the threads. This is used to pay for hosting the site. Other than that Sevenforums is completly free and powered by volunteers.

It's a great community from all around the world, old young and in between. Everyone shares their knowledge and I count on many members who have more experience in one or another area. Members have different focus - some build machines and have great hardware knowledge, others are or were software developers and well... have great software knowledge. Many of the members have "played" with Windows since Win1 and some have ancient wisdom. :)

We all pick up something from other members (you're a member too, ya know), and it's a lot of fun working with people such as yourself.

I'm glad you were able to retrieve your data and this episode gave you the impetus to move one more machine to Win8 (that decision made the solution to your thread really, really easy!)

When I eventually move to Win8, I might run into you over on Eightforums.

Regards,

Bill
