My W10 ISO image won't accept my product key

I made a W10 ISO back in Dec 2015 with the understanding I could use it as and when I wanted to. The MS web page I used at the time told me this would be OK because I was doing it before the 2016 cut off and I could upgrade 'later' with that ISO.

The ISO works fine and I've extracted it to a folder on my C drive. I double-click 'setup' and put my W7 product key in (the only one I've got) but it won't accept it.

Many thanks for your help.

what product key and where is it from? Is it from a reatail boxed version?

Are you currently running win7 on the same machine? If so , you could downgrade to 10.

OR you could run gatherosstate.exe on your win7 desktop, which outputs the GenuineTicket.xml

gatherosstate.exe is in the sources folder of the win10 iso. you can copy it to your win 7desktop.

Hi, yes it's a W7 key from a retail version that came in the usual card envelope etc.

I'm currently running W7 on this machine and I wan't to UPgrade to W10.

You should download the latest ISO free from Microsoft and just upgrade your win7 as long as it's activated it won't ask for a key your ISO is way out of date

Thanks for everyone's replies.

I managed to install W10 no problem at all after downloading the newest ISO. :-)

I have a question: I obviously didn't recieve a licence key with it, so from now on what do I do about that? Do I even need one now?

I went in to Control Panel>System and it says "Windows is activated".

If I ever have to reinstall can I just download the ISO again?

Thanks.

Once you have Win 10 activated on a computer, M$ store the hardware information on their servers so you can do a clean install (start from scratch), skip to enter a key and it will activate.

Win 10 is a downgrade and has many issues so I think you may come back to win7 soon.

OK thanks for your info. I hope I won't come back to W7 after all that. I actually read yesterday that over 50% of users are now on W10.

Only 50% after years of trying and free offers, coaxing, and cajoling by MS.

Much of it is because when people buy a new machine it comes with win10, the average user user just puts up with what they get.

They are not exactly rushing eagerly to "upgrade".

You might get along with it ok - some people do.

I almost do not miss running Win7 on the machines that used to have it but now they have LTSB/LTSC editions of Win10, which are nearly crapware free and mostly what I want (plus no unwanted feature upgrades with those babies) :D
