I reformatted my drive 2 nights ago after a trojan gave me trouble.

Naturally I'm getting tons of updates and some won't update.

I had this problem before, came here and got a fix. This fix isn't working this time around.

I have looked thru other posts with the same issue but 2 things didn't work for me and I was confused by other posts as the posters knew more about the pc than I do.

Can someone help?

Thank you.

It looks to me from a quick search as if the biggest cause of this error code is malware - what Anti-Virus are you using? - is it up-to-date?

Should be OK then - has it flagged anything at all? run a full system scan to check.

If nothing found, try renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder.

1. Log on an account with administrator privileges.

2. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".
4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
5. Type " REN %WINDIR%\SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION SDOLD" (without the quotes) and press Enter
6. Type "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) to restart the Windows Updates service.

Wait 10 minutes, and reboot - then do a manual check for updates, and see if that's helped.

Ok 8 bad guys were found and they were taken care of. I don't know if I proceed or not with your fix because of those results? .. I'm wondering why and how my java had a virus? 4 Java viruses, 2 trojan spywares and 2 exploit javas. I just reformatted so those viruses were taken over when I put everything back on?? I just answered my own question. These viruses were found in the Windows.old.000

That scan took 16 hours because of sleep mode!

Can I also ask, while I'm here, if there is any way to delete those old window folders?

which old windows folders? - the 'Windows.old' ones?
You can use Disk Cleanup to get rid of them - check the advanced options.
Which Java varsion do you have installed? - make sure it's the latest one by visiting www.java.com and comparing the version offered with the version quoted in your Programs listing (and you should never really install Java until your system is up-to-date on everything else - it's currently a major source of infections.)
Unless you actually use Java applications, the current recommendations are to uninstall it completely, because there are known unpatched vulnerabilities which Oravcle shows no signs of hurrying patches for.

Yes, by all means, do the rename - it may well help. (just test Windows Updates first, in case the cleanup has solved the problem!)

I did the above instructions, but I don't know how to manually check for updates. I had windows check for updates. It found that 1 error that I still have. It's an update for security so I'm really not happy about this. I'm actually getting a different error code now - 8024200D. I clicked to get help with the error, ran "Fix It" and still nothing.

Yes. I have 2 of those windows.old files now. Maybe 3. Everytime I reformat they appear. They are useless right?

I will check up on Java. I installed it last night.

If you're getting a different error, then it means that we've done something right :)

Please run the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply so I can take a look.
The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patien

That last instruction that you gave me. I have done that already.

I didn't see an advanced tab in disk cleanup. I reinstalled Java.

*edit - No I didn't use that tool you just suggested. I used a different one. Ok I'm on it.

I'm sorry. Sometimes I'm just thick headed with instructions. I can't find that CheckSur on the link you gave me. I did a search on it but nothing good comes up. Can you remind me how to get to my registry things so I can delete this stuff manually? I've been in there before, but it's been a long time so I forgot.

*edit - I remembered how to get in. I'm not touching a thing though until I hear from you.

I'm not asking for anything in the registry - yet!

Please open am Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following command

COPY C:\WINDOWS\LOGS\CBS\CBS.LOG %USERPROFILE%\DESKTOP\SFCBSLOG.LOG

Close the command prompt

You'll see a new file on the desktop - SFCBSLOG.LOG - please right-click on it and select Send to... > Compressed file
Accept the defaults.
This will create another new file - SFCBSLOG.ZIP - attach that to your reply.

 What is yontoo? I tried to download that Checksur .. I ended up downloading 7 something or other, which I did uninstall. Now there is a search bar on my toolbar and I HATE anything on my toolbar except tabs. That yontoo won't uninstall *sigh* and "default tab" is also newly installed. It's by "Search Results, LLC"

I get "access denied" when trying your above instructions.

I have no idea where you managed to get Yontoo from!
first uninstall it from Programs & Features, then fun a full System Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

If you get Access Denied in the Command Prompt, you ran a user-mode one, rather than an Elevated one.....

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
