I just had my computer reformatted and when setting it up i could not get the sound to work i have been troubleshooting this problem for two days with no luck. I have install drivers and then uninstalled them and tried different drivers. I took screen shots of any thing that i thould would be usefull. My speakers work because i hoooked them up to other devices and they work fine and the green bar is jumping in when the sound mixer is up and there is music playing in windows media player. I have a onboard sound card with three ports green orange and blue which i have tried all of them. any suggestions would be helpfull i have run out of ideas thanks.

The P5S800-VM has a Realtek ALC655 sound chip, according to Asus:
ASUS - - ASUS P5S800-VM
Have you tried the drivers direct from Realtek?
Realtek
These drivers include support for the ALC655.
I don't see any additional SiS chipset drivers that might be wanted.
(That's an old board. SiS chipset, AGP graphics slot, etc. Initial BIOS release from 9/2004. Most recent BIOS 7/2007.)

Stephen the specs as Layback says mate but just an alternative for you have you thought about a sound card for the machine?
It would save an awful lot of grief trying to work out the on board stuff and they are not expensive.
I have Asus Xonar DG cards in my machine and the GUI for mixing and adjusting the sound to your own tastes is just fantastic. Mine are hooked up to 5:1 Logitec Z506 systems the cards were about $35 and fitting is a piece of cake. Sound well is my cup of tea and I am a bit fussy when it comes to audio.
But the choice is yours of course
