Download DriverGenius, it'll track down the correct driver for your sound :)
Or go into your device manager, find your sound device that's missing the driver, and choose "update driver"

I have already been in device manager and updated all drivers.
I will down load what you suggested but a lot of these thing allegedly show you an error and want you to pay for the so called driver that is missing.

That's very true ;)

One option is to completely remove all sound related drivers from device manager (including ticking 'remove driver software') and installing the driver fresh from the realtek website.

I had already tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling ,
by the way the thing you advised to download said i needed 12 drivers at only $29.99...not
I have decided that it must be the on board sound card that is kaput,so will take it back to the shop for either a replacement or money back as i have only had it 6 days.

That's best thing to do. When you get a computer and you have problems right off the bat that are hard to solve, or you find something you don't like about it, RETURN that PC since you will start thinking Negatively about it. I learned the hard way with my first laptop. I just settled with it, and I hated it for the 2 years I owned it. This was an Acer Aspire laptop, which ALWAYS had bugs and NEVER worked correctly.

I now own an HP Pavilion DV7 4060us and it's the best laptop ever.

Yes, driver genius does cost $29.99 to purchase the program, I forgot to mention that bit.

But yeah, try finding the driver from your manufacturer.

Lets get basic.
What type of speakers you trying to use? home stereo, desktop component system for PC.
How are you connecting components? analog, digital, HDMI.
I connect a 2 channel, mini phono plug, to the green sound jack out, back of mobo to tv sound input.
Theres also a digital sound output, SPID. Theres an optical version of that.
What does device manager say, any flags?
