Solved No USB at POST after BIOS update

I updated the BIOS on a Gigabyte GA- MA790X (AMD socket) motherboard and my USB keyboard will no longer trigger BIOS access.

The system still boots correctly and the machine is very stable with no other issues. But it sucks having to keep a PS2 keyboard around in order to access the BIOS.

This doesn't make much sense to me, since the previous old BIOS accepted input from the same keyboard. Any ideas appreciated!

What problem were you having to warrant a bios update?

Check Device Manager and see if you are having problems with USB 2.0 or 3.0 drivers.

I upgraded my CPU, and the BIOS update was necessary for the mobo to recognize it.

DevMgr does not indicate any USB issues. All the USB devices functional normally in Windows, just not before windows boots.

I have never used a Gigabyte motherboard so I know little about the settings.
I suggest that your motherboard setting is where the problem is. (Bios)

Grab your motherboard manual and go through the settings.

Some one that uses Gigabyte motherboards would be more helpful.

Sorry about that. I will see if I can find someone. I went back to the ranch and requested help.
Hang in there.

I have been through the BIOS. The typical reference is to "enable USB legacy devices" or something like that (which is set to enable). That's why it seems so odd. Mobo's have been recognizing USB at POST now for a looong time.

Stupid question but have you tried switching off the legacy USB BIOS support and seeing if that makes a difference, I doubt it but ...

Toggling the USB support had only the expected effect - no USB support in Windows.

I have a GA-Z77-HD3 motherboard with an Intel CPU & according to my mobo manual Port 60/64 Emulation needs to Enabled for full legacy support for USB keyboards/mice in MS-DOS mode. The default setting is Disabled.

Try changing this & see if that helps.

Legacy USB Support also needs to be Enabled for USB keyboard/mice used in MS-DOS mode. The default setting is Enabled.

One other thought. I'm running in IDE mode and I thought under the old BIOS I was running in AHCI mode.

I would use AHCI. I'm not sure how that would effect USB support in bios.

I agree on both counts. I'm grasping at straws here. Logically, since the only thing I changed was the BIOS, the problem lies there.
Isn't it problematic to switch to AHCI from a windows install that has booted into IDE though? I sure don't want to reinstall windows.

In the past I have used the PS/2 connection via either an older mouse and KB or PS/2 to USB connectors to set the BIOS and I have also done drivers for this and that for that matter including chipset and USB drivers - then no problem.

But if the problem is fixed all well and good

Perhaps try resetting bios settings to the default.

Just an update on this in case someone else follows this breadcrumb;

I contacted Gigabyte e-support and after many painful exchanges with some drone who did not seem to be actually reading my questions at all, I was eventually rewarded with a newer BIOS that does not appear on the product support page for my mobo. This BIOS - F10e - instantly resolved the issue.

I had several exchanges with a 'tech' who suggested I try going back to the old BIOS, which Gigabyte explicitly states does not support my processor. Like that was going to end well!

So while I have to give Gigabyte creds for supporting a board that I bought quite a few years ago (i.e. very long out of wty) it's also fair to ding them a couple of points for a process that (needlessly) took weeks to resolve. And if the latest BIOS was simply on the product support page I would not have gone through this at all. Thankfully, it was a non-critical issue.

Well maybe they fixed a few things with the newer version.

Yes Roger had several "drone" interactions with not only Gigabyte but Asus drones too always suggesting something that I have tried already after advice from other members and usually the answer starts with mucking around in the BIOS - something I really am not a great fan of unless I am dealing with EUFI and the board has a back up BIOS chip in case I make a mess of it.

I wonder why manufacturers aren't updating their downloads section on their website but can update about new products.
