Not able to login on startup

First off I'd like to say I'm new to the forums and I apologize if I have posted this question in the incorrect area. I've just been having some trouble with my laptop lately, and have searched all over the internet for a solution. I can't find anything, so I decided I'd state my problem and hope someone could help.

The computer I'm using is a Dell Inspiron 1564. I've only had it a few months and it's been working great until last night. I had just finished up a game of Team Fortress 2 and exited out of the game. It brought me to my desktop, with parts of the game's main menu still showing. I gave it a few minutes to respond and it never did so naturally I brought up the Task Manager.

I attempted to end the process and it would not work. I gave it more than enough time before I ran out of patience and manually shut down my computer. Upon startup it gave me two options 'Run Windows Normally' and 'Launch Startup Repair.' I have tried both and had no success. I have also tried repairing my OS by inserting my Windows 7 disk to no avail.

After choosing a method, it brings up 'Windows is loading files...' and after it is done with that it will bring up the splash page (for lack of a better name) where the Windows 7 logo is usually present. My Windows 7 logo, however, is not there. It continues to go through the process of setting everything up until it hits my login screen.

Once at the login screen, it appears to be ready for me to login. The only problem is there is no area provided to enter my password and my picture is not displayed. Just the default background.

I've tried everything I can think of, and multiple things I've read, but I just can't get it to work. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for such a long post, I just didn't want to leave anything out.

Hello dmberry, welcome to Seven forums!

The first, easiest thing to try is a system restore, be sure to use a point before the issue started, have a look at the tutorial at the link below.

And how would I access that exactly, seeing as I'm not able to get to my desktop or any programs? Is it an option under 'Startup Repair?' Because I can't get to that either. :\

Then it goes back to 'Windows is loading files...', then to the green bars loading, then to a black screen for a few minutes, and then finally back to my default background with my cursor.

Please can anyone help? I know I'm being impatient, I'm just really upset I can't get this thing to work at all. It won't bother me at all if I lose all my data and have to re-install Windows. I just want to be able to use the thing again.

Sorry for such a late response, I've been busy these past few days.

I get to the menu that gives me the option to with 'Repair your computer' or 'Install Windows'. I've tried both and neither will work. As soon as I try to repair it hangs, and the same for re-installation.

I'm having this issue

I have a Dell Inspiron 1440, OS W7
I tried to turn it on today and I got the "Launch Startup Repair" or "Start Windows Normally" --- neither option got me anywhere.
Starting normally brings me back to that screen over and over and over again.
Doing the "Launch Startup Repair" brings me to a blue screen with a light wispy design in the background and nothing happens. No repair, no popup windows, just a blue birdy wispy screen of nothingness.
I have NO idea what to do.

Dmberry and Hbach -

I recently came across this same exact issue: Windows 7 login screen while booting up but NO login box. Just the "blue background with the wispy stuff" and a pointer. No way around it, not even through Safe Mode. I absolutely could not get access to my desktop, start menu, etc.

I have a Sony VAIO, and I don't know if your computers will be able to do this or if you've already tried it but I thought I would suggest it since it seemed like a miracle to me. I did not have my Recovery Discs and I thought there was going to be no way I could get it to return to factory settings and I'd have to resort to buying the Windows 7 operating system and installing it, even though I should have been able to restore.

I did a live chat with the Sony tech support and they had me hit F10 on bootup which brought me to a screen that would allow me to do a full system recovery. I realize you don't have VAIOs, but I just wonder if you've tried hitting a different key aside from F8 to see if there's any options for your specific computers that have a sort of hidden, built-in recovery system.

Again I realize our computers are different brands but we experienced the same Windows 7 issue, so I thought I would let you know what I was able to do to fix it without the use of a Recovery Disc. It is unfortunately a format and reset to factory settings so you will lose your personal data, but it's better than an inoperable computer.

I hope this helped in some way! :)

For future reference there is a fix. It involves activating the built in Admin account and booting from it.

BTW this is a fairly old thread you will get more response if you start your own but thanks for posting the fix.

Ken -

No one I spoke to during my 24 hour panic-mode ordeal mentioned anything about activating a built in Admin account, but I sure wish I would have heard about it! I'll have to research this for the future.

I saw that this was an older thread but the users with the problem seemed as desperate as I was today so I didn't want to start a new one, just wanted to let them know I found a solution in my specific case just to see if it could help them in theirs. I couldn't tell from this thread if they had found a solution yet or not. I hope they did!
