Thanks everyone! I created the boot discs -- one in Linux and the other WinPE. I don't know how to create an image from the WinPE disc. If the problem is the hard drive, then would that work?
I do have the keys for Windows 7 and Office Enterprise.
I would prefer to not have to install all of the programs again. I use several programs from Intuit from 2009 and 2010, and they are buggers to install on Windows 7.
I'll try the Windows Backup image next, but I did get one error from it already (1053). (Correction on the error - 0x80070422.)

kado897 and Golden will be able to help you with the WinPE, the imaging using the Windows was just a alternative in case the WinPE didn't work.

If you looked at the tutorial I posted earlier you can see what Macrium under Windows is like. The WinPE boot disk gives a very similar interface. You cannot make an image using the Linux disk, that only supports restoring. Some time ago I made a tutorial on restoring using the WinPE disk. If the HDD is failing (and the OS isn't working quite right because of it) the best way to try to get an image is to do it offline with a bootdisk (as you've made). I cannot say how well Macrium (or other imaging app) will do.
Please note that I'm not saying your HDD is definitely bad. It's just a number of the issues you described could be pointing to a bad drive. Whether good or bad, it's always better to have an image you might be able to use to restore to either the original or new drive.

I thought the image creation with the WinPE disk was going to work. It went through the analysis of C and said there was one hour to completion but then an error popped up, #1117. I'm going to bed and will check it in the morning.

Error 1117 - "is always caused by I/O (Input/Ouput) throughput issues with either the disk or the controller that it is attached to." So . . . not good.
I'm going to bite the bullet and take it into a shop with the hope that they can at least recover my Outlook data file.

32-bit ought to work just fine.
I wouldn't take it in just yet, unless you need that pst file ASAP. Try Golden's suggestion first. If that doesn't work because there is mechanical damage preventing you from copying the file, then you might try to get a recent version of the file by right clicking on the file in Explorer, click Properties, then click on the Previous Versions tab.

Shoot. Well, time was getting short, and it was running slowly again. I had downloaded the Lili file but was having problems after that -- I don't remember now exactly what -- so I took it in. They told me they couldn't recover the pst file and couldn't get an image either. In fact, they said the hard drive would hardly read anything. They installed a new drive and loaded the basics on it. Now I'm installing my software, resetting settings and putting back my data. You may see a new discussion from me if I have problems with any of this.

I do have good news to share. At some point earlier this week one of the Outlook data file attempts I made to back up did work. When I opened Outlook and connected the data file, I got the same scan.pst message as I had with the old hard drive. The scan took about an hour. Then it started to repair the file, and that took another half hour or so, but it worked. There were some folders that were "lost and found," but at least I have most of my emails in the right places, my contact list and my calendar. (I was starting to lose track of my appointments without that!)
So, now I'm working through some issues with password pop up windows and sending errors, but I can manage those.

The reason I asked about the old drive is because there are ways to coax more data out of it if you really needed it. It would cost a little just to try (an external enclosure, a USB adapter or another desktop you could temporarily place it in) but it might be worthwhile if you really needed the data.
