They claim "In Stock" but the specs are VERY slim. I wonder if it's really pre-orders. Intel doesn't even have them listed yet. Pricey even for AU$. :shock:

Hum well frankly it suprises me it is out here before the US - the site I get the newsletter from is pretty reliable.
Plus the prices are a touch wicked eh? but there again they always are out here.

I might just check with them if they have got it right.

One caution for that chip: it has only 28 PCI-e lanes opposed to the normal 40 lanes that the 5930, 5960, all the 2011 predecessors have (that would be a deal breaker for me). Also, the Haswell-e version of the 2011 socket is wired differently than the earlier ones; you can't use a Haswell-e chip on an earlier MOBO. You also have to use DDR4 RAM with these chips; no reusing your older DDR3s

As far as I know, there is nothing wrong with the new chips, RAM, and MOBOs (other than they aren't cheap, but, then, I am) but they are a new breed and people need to be aware of that. I personally feel one should wait a bit to let prices to come down, more DDR4 RAM to become available, and bugs to be worked out but, then again, that's me.

The i7-5820 has 28 PCI lanes. The i7-5930 and i7-5960 have 40 PCI lanes. And yes, while the socket is listed as 2011, it is actually 2011-v3 and new motherboards are required. Maximum memory transfer is listed as 68GB/s over four channels. The DDR-4 memory modules compatible with the memory controller are listed as 1333/1600/2133 so there's no speed increase there. The speed is most likely in the timings.

The 6 and 8 cores are what you're paying for. I'm still carrying my disappointment since Sandy Bridge on the slow rise in clock speeds. Of course 8 cores as 3.0Ghz will smoke my 4 cores at 3.5Ghz. But still, they should be in the 5.0 range by now.

Although a low-voltage standard has yet to be finalized, it is anticipated that low-voltage DDR4 will run at a voltage of 1.05V, compared to DDR3's low-voltage standard (DDR3L) which requires 1.35V to operate. DDR4 modules can also be manufactured at twice the density of DDR3.

The DDR4 standard is Intel's, but the boards will run faster memory. Just like my Z77 board. The Ivy Bridge chips say DDR3-1600 is the rated speed, but I'm running DDR3-2400 @2400. Most of the boards are claiming to range from 2800-300 speeds.

I have read that there are 16GB ram modules 'out', but I have yet to see one. Rumor has it, we will see them before long.

My understanding is that they make up that speed using the clocks Steve. The base speed of the chip is 800 but it runs at 2 clocks for 1600, 3 clocks for 2400, etc. I know that forr DDR3 there were mostly 800 and 1066 chips available to make a module. There were some 1333 chips but they were ungodly expensive.

EDIT: not clocks - errr. The double data rate. 800 x 2=1600. 1066 x2= 2100. 1333 x 3= 2666.

Double data rate is right, but now I guess we are going to see quad data rate. But, the speed Intel reefer's to is the end speed, 800X2=1600, with my CPU. But I'm running 1200 X 2=2400. The board is capable of running it faster.

The DDR = double data rate. That does not change. The 4 in DDR4 just means 4th generation chips.
The chips are the individual units that are soldered to and make up a module. I think Micron and someone else are the only players now making chips. As I understand it the 4th Gen chips run at a faster base speed and they are smaller so you can fit more of them on a standard size module. So we should see larger GB modules and faster total speed without overclocking.
