Hum well at these prices out of my budget but as you can see from the listing going like hotcakes
Quad Channel DDR4 Kits

I have my Ivy RAM clocked to 2400 (the max) and truly for me it doesn't make much difference over the default speed the Z77 board sets it at. My machine is slowing down (the Ivy Bridge) for some other reason as I have the CPU (i5 3750K) clocked to 4.4 now and still it is no where near as fast as when I built it.

The new stuff is like I said way out of my budget range but still interesting to read about.

I was on the Micron website and saw that they have DDR4 chips at 4GB right now in production. I can't tell from the website whether the chip is bigger, smaller, or the same size as DDR3 chips, so I can't tell how many will fit on a standard size module. But if you assume 4 on a single-sided and 8 on a double sided those will be some big modules.

But looking at the modules that Jeanie posted it could be just 2 chips on a module.

They also have 8GB chips in development. Could be a couple months before they go into production.

Those are the clock speeds of the chips. The modules will run at Double Data Rate, or twice the clock speed of the chip - the same as DDR3. So the slowest speed of a new module should be 2100. The other stock module speeds will be 2400 and 3200.

Some of these speeds etc are probably not really of much use for "the average joe" - but of course once we start entering the realms of Holographic projection, robotics, Virtual reality and nano technology then absolutely -- in fact even the fastest machines available today have to be zillions of times faster before this type of technology becomes even remotely useable. !!

The problem is of course in how to test this stuff in volume affordably -- very few people are going to
pay a MILLION dollars US to have a nice Aircraft simulator in their home - but if the price were say 50,000 US -- OK still a lot of money but not totally out of reach for a lot of people even on these Forums - and of course with volume the price would fall.

Prices of the DDR4 will drop too after the "newness" wears off and production ramps up. Newegg's prices on the new Intel processors are always over OEM retail for a few months. They (and everyone else) try to capitalize on the "Edge" groups and holiday shoppers. Look for prices to settle down after the first of the year.

There's already 16GB DDR4 modules for desktops in the pipeline but be prepared with Deep Pockets.
Modules over 8GB have been available for years in DDR3 but not many retailers will stock them since they're primarily used by server builders. There are users and then are really big USERS.
