What's definitive is the maker's HD Diagnostic which may take some research given it's Samsung. I don't think I'd rely on any other maker's diagnostics completely, but a combination of the closest DIagnostics extended CD scan, SMART output, Disk Check on full drive. Even then I'd want to see how a reinstall to new or borrowed HD performed to have fullest confidence in calling it the HD.

Britton was helping you with finding the Samsung diagnostics, so I'd pursue it since that is the tool which gives the definitive diagnostics unless you want to try SpinRite which is expensive but may have a trial version out there (they come and go).

@gregrocker,
Its hard to use that HD Diagnostic link as do the Samsung part has two links and both of them I get 404 not found :(
Tell you what am going to reinstall windows now *After backing up my stuff* and I will let you know!
I have got a other PC and it has a 160GB HD with Windows 7 on it..

@F5ing,
Here is your screenshot after all that Smart is still disable?

Recheck that SMART remains Enabled in BIOS setup because that reading could indicate buggyness of SMART, HD or Seagate possible as used on Samsung.

I wondered why no SMART results show up under BIOS PC Health.

If you'd feel comfortable borrowing the HD from other PC you could first shrink the largest partition in Disk Mgmt to make space for a test install, then plug it into problem PC, if it won't start immediately boot Win7 installer to do a test install to see if issue resolves after sufficient testing.

Otherwise the suspect HD may be proven good by a perfect reinstall using Win7's choice of drivers, if you think that is a more likely prospect.

@gregrocker,
That is what I did and its enabled.

No idea!

What I will do is format my HD and put windows 7 64 bit back on to it.
And then play a game (remember only crashes when gaming) If it dose I will report back here with a new dump and we can talk more about me moving HDs

What's especially important here is to get a baseline perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 after wiping the HD with Diskpart Clean Command so that software is removed from the list of suspects.

The steps in the blue link show the tools and methods which work the best based on countless thousands of installs we've helped with here and will assure a perfect install only if you follow them closely.

Thanks for checking this and providing a screenshot.

And yeah, that's pretty much what I expected. But I wanted you to check to confirm.

Leave the SMART parameter enabled in your BIOS. At least until advised otherwise.

The way I understand it, the SMART parameter in the BIOS on newer motherboards would be more appropriately named "Check drive's SMART status at startup", or something similar. It's not the same as earlier versions of SMART, where apparently some of the SMART functionality was intergrated into the board and the drive was dependent on it. Seems it's actually a good thing to build all the functionality within the drive itself, that way there's no chance of conflict between various MB/drive combinations.

Now we've just got to figure out how to turn on the drive's SMART functionality (so that the MB actually has something to detect during boot). I've found some of the programs I had looked at in the past, just got to figure out which one is easiest as well as "trustworthy".

Really wonder how it got turned off to begin with. I wonder if it could have been shipped that way.

One other thing. Greg mentioned downloading/running CrystalDisk. Did you ever do that? I'd like to see what it says about your drive. Screenshot would be great!

Did you get another SMART reading? This can be done from the desktop (in IDE mode) by installing CrystalDiskInfo - Software

@gregrocker,
And I am done! It took me 6 hours to do a "Clean all via cmd" But its done :)
So far I have only installed
*Internet drives / Sounds drives
*Windows updates
*Microsoft Security Essentials
*Skype
*Windows Live Mail
*Google Chrome
*Steam
*Java
Not in that order.

@F5ing,
Sure thing! Anything to fix this PC :)
I have not touched the BIO I have left what is needed on.

You just link me to the programs and I will do the scans! Like I said I really want to stop this PC from crashing.

Must of been? I have never touched the BIO I have been scared I may mess it up.

I did for you and here you are:

Good job on the reinstall!

Run Seatools again. See if it shows SMART disabled.

Also, if you haven't done it yet, run the diagnostics from Samsung. Find it here (about halfway down the page): http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html

A Samsung screenshot please!

@F5ing,
Here is your Seatools:

Everyone sends me that link but, I keep telling them its dead :C

Samsung - Go to http://www.samsung.com/us/support/ and select "Hard Disk Drives" under the Office category.
Enter the information about your hard drive model, then click on the Get Downloads link on the next page, then on the Software link on the following page.
If there's no downloads available, try this link - it seems to be the same version (ESTOOL v3.01) for every drive: http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c...th=SW/201011/20101118113245515/ESTOOL301v.iso
You must unzip the file before you can burn (NOT copy) the ISO image to a CD.

404 not found.

Also thanks ^_^

Correct Link

Samsung no longer does Hard Drives, this was sold to Seagate, I provided you a link for their Hard Drive section.

Have you gone into your advanced system settings in control panel and told it not to restart on errors? Might be blue screening, just it flashes too fast for you to catch it. I assume after you reinstalled it had the same issue, is your HDD partitioned as one single partition?

You're welcome, of course.

Forgot that it was this thread where the OP was requested to go to that site, only to find a 404. Sorry.

Even though there are only three companies that own the 7 or 8 different brands of drives you'll run across, some of the original companies continue to provide the diagnostics program for their old drives. I think the Samsung hard drive line was taken over by Seagate last year. That said, searching Seagate's site for Samsung branded hard drives revealed limited info. Other than links to the Seatools utility.

So now I'm at a loss. I've got to think about this. Why does CrystalDisk show valid SMART values even though Seatools show SMART as disabled? Could those be old values from when SMART was active on the drive, and they haven't been updated since disabled? I'm not sure what you would really see on a drive where SMART was disabled. Never seen it disabled (that I recall).

Can you disable in the BIOS and then do a CrystalDisk screenshot? Just to see if it reports the same values.

Reenable it when done.

Missed a few posts prior to mine. There is info on Seagate's site for your model, but very little...

Its not your fault, Its just everyone links me there and I see why but its no help if the links are dead.

Ye, am at a lost to :/ I just don't understand why my pc crashes when gaming?
I mean the pc specs are perfect for dose games.. memtest + passed 6 graphics card is up-to-date and is working fine (as I can see) Left my CPU running with prime95 for two hours and it never crashed it did go to 61oc but still no crash?
Which leaves me to my HD, I want to say its healthy but that is not my call...

And yes Seagate has info for my model, But nothing that will help me :(

So, let's see if those SMART values are static or are being updated as if SMART was running.

Set up CrystalDisk to launch on computer startup so that it's always running. Make sure to set it so it updates every 30 minutes or so. After a period of time you can use the graph function it provides to see if those values change over time.

You ought to see changes in temperature, runtime hours, etc.

@F5ing,

Sure! I will post my results back in about 2 hours ish?
Would you like me to turn SMART back on in my BIO?

It would be interesting to see what happens both ways. Enabled and disabled.

If you look in CrystalDisk's subfolders, you'll see text file(s) that contain the recorded values. So if the changes are too small to see on the graphs (due to wide scaling) you should be able to easily spot changes in the text files.
