I tried Diskpart much earlier this afternoon but will try again.

No it shows that even though I was able to remove the read only attribute I was not able to remove or change the '''Current state Read-Only Attribute'''

The CMD window is confusing. But you have the drive in a RAW state now.

I am unable to do anything with it as the Mbr is still advising the stick to be read only.

Both if possible. Read Only is an attribute which must be applied...odd it can't be removed. Is the drive one you bought or supplied by someone with, say, software on it?

I started to put Xp on it but it wouldn't work.

Would anyone know what the password would be for Administrator on an Xp recovery disk?

Use the bootable CD to see if you can access the pendrive.

Just looked at that diskpart window, are you typing the command correct? E.g. readonly is one word. Check.
