Hi All,

I am about to build a system for my son for his birthday and need help deciding between 2 graphic cards.
My brother has a GTX 580 Asus which I can buy for $150 or I was thinking of purchasing a new Asus GTX 660 for $245.
Can someone please help me decide which is best?
My son is not a big gamer mainly loves wow.

Cheers

I would go with the GTX 580 because it's $95 cheaper for you. WoW depends mostly on the CPU, so the GTX 660 should be just as good as the GTX 580 for it, but of course it would cost $95 more. For games the depend more on the video card, I think the GTX 580 would be better than the GTX 660.

thanks for the very fast reply.
I would like to hear what anyone else thinks also?
The 580 has 1.5gb and the 660 2gb will that make much difference?

The 580 comes out on top because it was last series top single GPU for Nvidia

they are evenly matched in area's but the 580 runs away in some games on that list this is also a good comparison chart here Video Card Comparison - GPUReview.com

here is what they look like paired up also a slight overclock could well be a factor too

I would go for the GTX 660 as my friend bought this a few weeks ago. When he bought his pc couple of months ago he had the 580 with it. Very good card but he said better performance from the 660. Yes its more money but it all depends on what you want to be using it for

Yeah, but if WoW is pretty much the main game being played, then I would get the used 580 because that's $95 cheaper.

ah did not see that at the end :) yes then If you want to save money then the 580. But if he was playing COD (Call of Duty) or BF3 then the 660

Yeah, I missed it at first too because I'm used to "WoW" with the capital letters like that.

Solarstarshines, I like that link way better than the one I posted:thumbsup:

@op I think the 580 is a better choice from the info given, however I think you should give us the specs of the system, the 580 does require more power

Oh good point. If he were to ever really use the full 3D processing power of the GTX 580 (such as many modern video games like first-person shooters), then he would need a quality-made 500-550W PSU. A high-end 450W PSU would be ok too.

The processor will be i7 3770.
The power supply will be 800w.
It will be on windows 7.
My son might play COD eventually.
Thanks so far guys.
