I'm wondering if there was a way to wake a windows 7 machine from sleep or hard drive power down etc, anything to save some electricity whenever network activity to that machine is requested?

I know there is a MAGIC PACKET that will wake when that magic Package is sent . However I'm wondering if there is a way to so this without that specific packet.

The Goal is to have my basement PC shut down some while not in use and when im upstairs and I access my Win 7 machine (which has drive mappings to the basement for all my profiles etc) that it would wake up?

Thanks in Advance

I know about the MAGIC Packet but that requires me to run a specific progrma to generate the MAGIC packet when I want to wake the machine.

Thats not what IM trying to do.

I want to wake the machine using ANY kind of connection to the machine. IE its in sleep mode I fire up the upstairs PC and since it has instructions to map the Q drive from the machine downstairs it attempts to connect to the machine downstairs and it wakes it up.

I think the answer to your question is yes, as long as it is supported by the BIOS and NIC card/driver. I was able to wake a Windows 7 PC with a simple ping or remote desktop request before joining it to a Domain Controller. All I had to do was make sure it was enabled in the BIOS and also in device manager (properties of the NIC). There are some advanced power management features in Win7 regarding this, not sure if they will affect what you are trying to do. This thread has other issues/info regarding WOL if you are interested. http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/21027-wake-pc-rdp-connection.html
