Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask for help but the error message that I got gave me a hunch that it was here. I disabled some windows features that I was sure I wasn't using and after some time I noticed that I actually needed IE9 because of compatibility issues with my campu's homepage.

Now to the problem, after re-enabling IE9 and other features of windows i got the message "Configuring Windows updates x% complete Do not turn off your computer." while restarting and after the restart it got stuck for a good couple of hours at "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." After that I had to do a system restore and tried to re-enable the windows features and kept getting the same error.

I don't want to screw up my OS so I thought this was the place to ask because the problem itself had no error codes, the computer was stuck with a windows update message.

My question is, Can I turn on/off the windows features again without freezing/restoring my system? I followed the instructions in the sticky, if it helps I was using a custom theme for windows but I am in doubt if that was the cause of the problem.

Many custom themes screw up Explorer/IR functionality, and break updates - so it could be that (which ones are you using?).

Having said that, the problem is shown well in the CheckSUR report....

So yes, the Theme is definitely part of the problem!

We need to see what the problem is with the Event log services....

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

The fact that the EventLog service can't start is blocking the WERSVC from starting....

Reboot to Safe Mode
Navigate to
C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI
(you'll have to enable access to the folder)

In there should be the RtBackup folder - rename it to RtBackup.old

Reboot to Normal Mode and WAIT 15 minutes for the system to rebuild any data before running the above SC/NET commands again - post the new results.

Good - that's OK now.
See what happens if you attmpt Windows Update now - do a manual Check For Updates, and attempt to install only the oldest available - what error message do you get, if any?

Hi, it didn't seem to fix the problem, when I attempted to enable IE9 and disable Desktop Gadgets in "Turn Windows Features on or off" my computer got the "Configuring Windows updates % complete. Do not turn off your computer." message and after the restart it got stuck in the Welcome loading at least 30 minutes (when it usually loads in a couple of seconds) before I had to manually shut down the computer and after the second restart, waiting the same time, the same happened so I booted into safe mode and restored the system, otherwise I wouldn't be able to use it.
