I don't understand. The download completes or not? If it does, you double click the file and that download dialog comes up?

What exactly are you downloading, can you post the url where you are downloading from.
The name of the download in your screen print seems odd to me.

I looked around on OpenDNS and maybe this works differently than what you expect...
I found this page https://store.opendns.com/setup/computer/#
It does have a video to help getting started ...

I just clicked on your link and the actual application came up so thank you , as you can see in the bottom screenshot my download had a different end name which I don't know what it is.

Judging from the screenshot in your first post, the file is being saved with the wrong file extension. As you tried other places to download that same file from, you got different (but still wrong) file extensions. Eventually, you used one of DavidW7ncus's links - which got you the file with the correct file extension.

IE.png

Notice the IE icon by the file and the ".com......" file extension.
Sometimes the period that marks the file extension will be right before the COM part. But other times, one of the underscores that you see in the screenshot above will be replaced with a period and the COM part will be dropped. You are lucky to be getting any file extension.

Sometimes they all stay as underscores:

dot.png

So, why doesn't every IE user have this problem?
Good question. Let me know if you ever figure it out.

I have several W7 computers at the office that do this...
...and several that never do it.
I've tested with IE8, IE9, IE10 and IE11.
Most of the time, the files download with the wrong extension.
But sometimes, the correct extension comes thru.
Both of these situations happen while getting a file from the exact same webpage internal to the company.

I've reset IE.
I've used the safe mode.
I've started IE without extensions.
I've turned it over to our IT guys.
I'm not messing with it any longer :-)

So it seems like it's an IE download issue.
Having another browser(s) might be a "suggested workaround" for this issue.
That way, if there is a problem downloading with IE, it's quick and easy to test with another browser.
I have 2-3 browsers on all my systems, just in case there is any issue, so I can quickly test a different browser...

I use three browsers at the same time most every day.
Pale moon for these forums.
Chrome to stream stuff.
IE for searches and when I want to test visiting a website that I'm not logged into.

At work, only IE8 is supported :-(

I've pushed that to IE9 in places...
...but IE10/IE11 breaks some internal stuff.

IE does download the file without corrupting the contents.
We just have to rename the file before opening it.

+1.

Another good idea is to have Firefox 27.0 Portable on a USB. You can drag the whole folder onto the HD for faster execution without having to "install" it. I have Pale Moon x64 installed and to me FF portable is just as fast. I mainly have Pale Moon so I can set it as default without portable kludging.

Thank you very much David, UsernameIssues and MilesAhead , I appreciate all your assistance.

Actually I hate using IE but Chrome seems to have a lot of issues the last time I tried it , was thinking of trying Maxthon but don't know if it's worth it.

Never cared for Firefox much.

You're welcome.
At least now you know an IE download problem might be solved by renaming the file.
UsernameIssues has seen this problem and explained it very well. +1

MilesAhead pointed out having a portable browser as a good "backup option". +1
That way you don't have to install and maintain a secondary browser, but you can run another browser if/when you have IE issues.
Something to consider ... ?

If you have issues with Chrome, have you asked for help in the Browsers & Mail - Windows 7 Help Forums forum ?
Maybe you have "other system issues" causing Chrome problems ???

I don't know why you don't care for Firefox.
The new FF ver. 29 looks a lot like Chrome, if that is important for you.
Some people like it, some don't ...

You can try Chromium snapshots. Use only the win32 zip file, not the installer. Before you unpack a new build to use it, save the folder the exe file is in and the folder the profile is in. That way you can go back to an older working version if you try a newer build with bad bugs.
If you have chrome installed it will pick up the settings. Then you can uninstall the original chrome once you make the snapshot the default browser.

I went back to FF once it loaded and ran fast. No need to have a dozen exe files running like chrome.

I did MaxThon for awhile. It was much better in version 2.x when users wrote extensions for it. There was a fun community of people adding features at the request of other users. With 3.x only "official" extensions can be used. In effect they killed it.

For FF portable I recommend finding 27.0 and using that. Seems even 27.01 has funky issues and now they are following Opera to be yet another chrome look-alike. I always hated the "ribbon interface" as it just sweeps the menu under the rug. But those are my prejudices. :)

Thanks guys , the thing I like about Chrome is the speed and the feature that makes things instantly pop up as you type .

Firefox always confused me because I don't understand all the versions , what's wrong with just having one updated version , with FF I never know if it's updated or not and which would be the most secure version.

I found chrome to have a lot of browser hijackers even when I used extensions like adblock plus.

I checked out the browsers page and I will try Opera , any opinions on that one

Thanks again.

I have Opera 12.14 64 bit on my system. I don't use it that often. But it is quite fast. Also it is usable "out of the box." It definitely is good to have. A nice thing about HD > 1/2 TB being common is you don't have to uninstall just to get a few MB back. You can leave some alternatives installed without feeling any pain. :)
