Problems with Windows Update

I just started having a problem with the Windows Update. I just recently reinstalled Windows 7 64bit and it was installing updates just fine.

Then I did something I probably shouldn't have. It was in the middle of installing updates and it got stuck on an update, can't remember which one, there was over a hundred in that batch. But I kept checking on it and it never did go past the update no matter how long I let it sit there. I had to restart the pc for other reasons. I realize you shouldn't restart or shut down the pc while Windows is installing updates but if it gets stuck on an update, what are you supposed to do? I tried stopping the installation but that did not work.

Anyways, after I restarted, everything seemed fine. Windows installed SP1 without any issues shortly after so I thought everything was fine. But apparently not. Now I can not get Windows to check for updates. I found out the Windows Update service is not running. So I tried to start it and it gives me an error "error 0x80070057, the parameter is incorrect."

Did I screw it up by restarting in the middle of Windows updating or is there something else going on here?

I have tried a Microsoft Fix it for windows update but it gave me an error while trying to install it.

I was going to try and do a repair install but I am not sure I can. When I select upgrade instead of custom, it says I have a newer version of Windows already installed.

I would try first to do a system restore and go back to the last point that was stored before any of the updates were done if it will let you. If not, i would try a repair install off the windows disc if you have the disc available.

Most of the time, Windows will survive that of treatment - but every once in a while you can catch it at the wrong time :(

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

Ok, I am having all kinds of trouble. I tried to install SURT and get an error code when trying to install it. The error code is 0x80080005, server execution failed. I downloaded the right version.

I ran the SFC Scan and it did not find any integrity violations.

I can't seem to get to the page where it shows the Windows Update error codes. When I click on view update history, nothing comes up on the page, it is blank.

I am not sure how to post the Logs folder. The size limit for a zip file is 8mb and my log folder is 16mb. How do I go about posting that?

I was going to try a repair install but I am not sure I can. When I run the cd and chose upgrade for the installation option, it says I am running a newer version than what I would be installing. Do I need to do something different to do a repair install?

A WU reset is unlikely to fix this type of problem - we may be looking at a repair install

Please first upload the following files

C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log - you'll need to copy it to the desktop then compress the copy before uploading it.

I tried uploading the CBS log but the folder is to big even when compressed. The size limit for zip files is 8mb and my CBS log folder is 16mb. Can I compress it again to make it small enough to post?

Here is the Windowsupdate file:

delete the older CBSPersist files until the compressed file is under the limit - or upload the complete folder to your favourite fileshare site and post a link.

Try this and see if it works.

Is there a better site to upload files than dropbox?

You know what, I think I am going to do a clean install of Windows since I just have the basic stuff installed and not much extra. I guess it would be a good idea to let Windows finish updating before I start installing programs except for the bare minimum?

I couldn't see any signs that you'd done a CheckSUR scan?

No I did not run a CheckSUR scan. I did not notice anything telling me to run that scan. So what does that failure tell you?

Doesn't really matter now anyways, I went ahead and did a clean install of Windows 7. So far I had one issue with Windows updates. It installed 137 updates and I went to restart it and it went through the process of configuring the updates. Right after it configured the updates, it said shutting down like it was going to restart it but it never did do anything. I probably let it sit there for a hour or more seeing if it would ever restart but it didn't. So I hit the restart button and it went ahead and finished configuring the updates. So far everything seems to be ok, it has installed several more updates since then.

What are you supposed to do if it hangs during a Windows update restart? What about when it is in the middle of an update installation?

Normally when I reinstall Windows, I will go ahead and install programs while Windows installs the updates and never really had an issue until this past time which maybe because I shut it down in the middle on an install. This time, I am going to wait until all the updates are installed before I install any programs. I did install antivirus programs but nothing else.

I am not sure if this would cause an issue with Windows update, but I have some programs that are installed to the second drive, mainly games and photoshop. Would those programs cause any issues?

Another question about Windows updates, right now there is no more important updates. But there are 8 optional updates. Some of those are drivers, antivirus updates and programs like Bing. There are a few updates for Windows 7 x64. Should I install the updates for Windows 7 x64? Why are they optional?

Thanks for your help.

Generally if the shutdown fails to do so, then look at the hard drive activity light (if there is one) and check for any activity there - if there's none at all for at least a minute, then I reckon it's safe to switch off. If there's a repetitive pattern to the blinking, but mostly it's off, then it's a little risky, but usually ends up OK - but I follow it immediately with another shutdown/restart to embed anything that may not have processed fully.

Then things get more risky with the amount of disk activity :)

Good luck with the new install!

.... Optional Updates -
I always hide Bing :)
I'd install the Windows updates - they are probably compatibility updates, which may ease installation and running of older programs.
Drivers - up to you, but may be worth having if you have any problems with the ones already installed. Check your manufacturer's website first, though - they may have more recent ones than WU does.
If by 'AV updates' you mean MSE ones, then MSE has its own installation routine for updates, and the one in WU is really just to let you know - I install them anyhow.
Silverlight - debatable whether you have any need for it, as it's not a very popular programming tool, and MS has basically canned it, as I understand it. Don't install it unless you have a need for it.

Well I do not have a hard drive activity light. My case does not have that option.

So far, everything seems to be doing okay. I think all the updates have been installed.

Do you know anything about the optional updates? I have a few that are called Update for Windows 7 x64, should I go about installing those or not worry about them? How does Windows know what to leave unchecked? I had a few important that were left unchecked as well. Since they are unchecked, does that mean I do not need them at all. Would I be hurting anything by installed them?

You must have posted while I was typing my post. Anyways, I will go ahead and install the updates not worry about the rest of the updates.

One other question, do you see any issues with installing programs on a second drive? Programs like antivirus programs and browsers I install onto the main drive. But programs like Microsoft Office(Office 2013 did not give me an option where to install it) I usually install onto the second drive.

There's really no benefit to installing programs onto another drive - and if the 'other drive' is actually a partition on the same disk drive as Windows then there are very good reasons not to as it increases the wear on the drive head, and slows things down.
If your Windows drive goes belly-up you have to reinstall both anyhow.
I just keep the Windows drive big enough to hold Windows and the programs, and move data off into another partition/drive.

The second drive is an actual hard drive and not a partition on the same drive as Windows.

One reason I did this is my Windows drive is an SSD drive and always thought it was better to keep as much free space on an SSD drive as possible. I mainly install stuff like games like BF3, and other stuff like Photoshop, Office, etc on the second drive. Stuff like antivirus programs I keep on the main drive.
