Solution: Windows 7 x64 Freezes w/ hard drive activity
SOLUTION TO VISTA x64 and WINDOWS 7 x64 FREEZE with CONSTANT HARD DRIVE ACTIVITY / LIGHT
(or at least to my problem...maybe yours is the same!)
I'm not sure this is the right place/forum, but I have a SOLUTION that has worked (so far) to solve my problems of Windows 7 x64 freezes.
The symptoms were:
10 to 30 second freezes with constant hard-drive activity (ie, the hard-drive light was on). Recovered after that.
What I did to fix it:
In device manager, my AHCI driver (some sort of hard drive driver) was a "standard 1.0" one, or something like that, which was installed by windows automatically when I installed the new OS (clean install).
Apparently this is not the correct driver for my system (a few years old Thinkpad T61), and windows update / update-driver doesn't find anything newer. So, I went to intel's website, and downloaded the "Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager", at:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=17882&lang=eng
They have a version that works for Windows 7 x64 (just check out the download site yourself, because the above version might not be exactly what you need).
Once it installed, I see under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in Device Manager, some intel stuff. I believe the ICH8M UltraATA 2850 storage controller did not change, but instead of the "Standard 1.0" (or whatever it was) AHCI controller, it now shows Intel(R) ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller.
FREEZES ARE GONE! Yay!
If this helps anyone, go post it in another forum to spread the word. I know a lot of people have had this constant-hard-drive-activity freezing in Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64.
