Solved Recent problem going to sleep

My laptop has a light on the back of the lid showing when it's on. Normally when I close the lid it goes to sleep & the light goes off. The past week I've noticed that the light is staying on-and when I open the lid it appears the computer has not gone to sleep as it should. Usually when I re-close the lid it does go to sleep. I might think this is just a task taking extra time to shut down but I've waited up to an hour & the computer still won't sleep until I open & close the lid (and not always then, particularly if I do it right away).

I don't see exceptional CPU usage but something's going on & I'd like to know what. I'm trying to eliminate unneeded processes that run in background, even when they don't appear to be active (i.e. using the CPU). The one I'm stuck on now is wmpnetwk. Supposedly this is used for media sharing-except that I have media sharing turned off & it still runs. Is there anything else that requires this? Is it safe if I just disable it via services?

I'm also trying to check taskhost. I've noticed that it hangs up, at least for a while, when I shut down. I've downloaded Process Explorer but can't seem to find out what's using taskhost. (As with wmpnetwk taskhost doesn't appear to be using CPU.) Nor is it always running when I check. (I need to be more systematic about checking when I notice the problem but often I'm in a hurry-I shut the lid as I'm heading out the door.)

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Download Process Monitor and start capturing a trace before, during and after you close the lid, stop the trace and save out the trace.
Start a new trace by closing and relaunching Process Monitor but this time do the double time closing of the lid to make
it go to sleep, then open and save that trace.

Now you can compare the two and find the difference and the culprit.
If you're unsure you can upload the traces zipped and named and I'll have a look .

Ran the monitor & produced a log file with a half-million entries. I suspect that means I've got too much stuff running even though I thought I was doing a good job paring it down to the essentials. I'll take another look & then try again, hopefully producing a log file of a manageable size. Thanks.

No that doesn't mean that at all Procmon monitors everything! on the system, you will always get an manageable
amount of data at first you need to logically filter it.

I offered my help but I won't be able to look at it until tomorrow, but you can upload the traces as requested
above and I'll do my best.

OK, if what I got was normal then I'll do as you suggested. No hurry on anything-it's an annoyance, not a problem, and I also get pulled away on other problems, sometimes for weeks. I appreciate your help, whenever you're able to provide it. Thanks.

Is it good news or bad news? Now that I've got Process Monitor ready it's stopped staying on. I'll close this out & repost, with logs, if it starts doing it again. But I'm hoping it won't even if it leaves me greatly puzzled.
