...on my external hard drive. And it's annoying to say the least. I'm using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and I have the hard drive in question set to bypass the recycle bin in the recycle bin properties. But that folder keeps getting recreated. I know I can hide it from view on the computer but I use the external hard drive for watching videos on TV. It's connected through the blu-ray player. So that's where it shows up...in the folders on the drive when looking at em on the TV. Is there any way to get rid of this folder or stop it from being created? I've used the drive without this issue occurring when copying files to the drive with an XP computer but can't seem to stop it happening with Windows 7.

an interesting note, recycle bin is on every drive you hook to the computer. Windows recreates recycle bin when it is deleted on one of these drives. But How else do you plan on deleting items on the HDD without a recycle (or trash) bin?

Could you post a pic of what you are talking about, where recycle bin shows? i wouldn't try to delete the recycle bin myself, it is a system protected file.

Happens to me and my portable hdd.. Just don't click on the file when on your tv lol does no harm.

I wouldn't even consider it a minor inconvenience lol.

No, it is very much supposed to be created there, as windows creates it on every hdd, everytime, wether external or internal

Then I'd love to know why $RECYCLE.BIN in fact never appears on my USB stick or external HD, which are both formatted to NTFS (if that matters)...not that I'm complaining about it, mind you...

its a hidden file, which links back to your recycle bin on the desktop. nothing is stored in this recycle bin (usually)

@2008: Where's the Recycle Bin on my USB Drive?
@2008: Recycle Bin on External Hard Drive - Windows-XP-General-Discussion - Windows-XP

Bit more explaination @2008: neatnettricks :: View topic - Does an external hard drive hava a "recycle bin?"

Another link to an explaination @2006-10: External hard drive has recycle bin--how to access? - CNET Storage Forums

Even better explaination @2010: Has Windows 7 cancelled the Recycle Bin feature of my external USB - Microsoft Answers

Most of these are older explainations, apparently people don't ask too much about them on newer windows oses. But I don't think much has changed in the recycle bin's functionality

guarantee that if you mess with your hdd in the way oprez has, you'll experience the same problem

I have a USB stick attached to this computer, NTFS also, and no $RECYCLE.BIN either. Yes, I have tried exposing same by un-checking "Hide protected OS".

I observe also that this removeable drive does not appear in Recycle Bin as a selectable option i.e. it HAS NO recycle bin.

Apparently removeable drives should not/do not have Recycle bins? And so the OP's problem is that the PC doesn't think it's removeable? Maybe a BIOS setting i.e. perhaps it is an eSATA drive, or Firewire or something?

I need to read all of DustSailor's links...

Those are older links, perhaps things have changed, I don't know. I didn't think USB had recycle bins, but I did think removable HDDs did. I could always be wrong. I don't feel like searching myself, but I do notice in disk cleanup all of my drives have their own recycle bin (none are removable), if that is any indication that drives have recycle bins or not.

also, I notice I cannot do the same for my USB (disk cleanup)

It depends how an external storage device represents itself to Windows which determines whether a recycle bin folder is placed on the device.

And that means...what exactly? :p

The OP needs a way to tell Windows not to put the folder onto the drive, so that it doesn't appear on his BD player menu (i.e. hiding it in Windows doesn't help him).

What I'm saying is I don't think that it is possible. Perhaps there is a windows recycle bin expert that comes around and proves me wrong, but until then, gunna have to live with the way windows set things up, bro. logic got it right, it does depend on how hardware represents itself to windows in determining wether or not you get recycle binned or not

It's really simple - $RECYCLE.BIN will appear on fixed drives. It's never created on removable drives (meaning, those that Windows considers to be removable).

What puzzles me is why your external drive, which should be seen as a removable drive (and is, after all), isn't treated as such by Windows.

My experience matches oprez's. I just tried two external drives I have handy, one an eSATA and the other a USB. Both behave exactly the same:

1. If it has a $RECYCLE.BIN directory (only visible w/"Hide protected system files" unchecked), delete it
2. Disconnect and re-connect, no $RECYCLE.BIN
3. Delete something, anything, then $RECYCLE.BIN appears again
4. Try setting drive to "Don't move files to Recycle Bin. Remove immediately" in Recycle Bin properties and that doesn't help; a $RECYCLE.BIN is still created.

I'm not sure what to make of your counter-experience Corazon--this seems to work the same for all my W7 PCs (Home Premium).

I wonder too what the RECYCLER dir is about--maybe one has to delete an entry in there as well???

Your issue fascinated me enough to Google some more on it, and I came-up with another thread right here that says "no solution":

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/45480-disable-creation-recycle-bin-folder.html

What is confusing of course is that Corazon doesn't have the $RECYCLE.BIN. I wonder what is different about his setup vs the-rest-of-the-world's.

P.S. I looked in the registry to see what I might find, and there were only some references to Windows Index fwiw.

P.P.S. My comment about RECYCLER is irrelevant--that one gets created when the drive is plugged into an XP machine (which I do too).
