Hey guys.

I've downloaded a few programs but a lot of them downloaded themselves to a temp folder not under program files. So unless I launch them after install there's no way to open the program unless I manually go into the temp folder and unzip it again. How come it doesn't fully install as a program or why can't I choose where it saves to.

Hmmm, think we need more information. How are you downloading the programs? Do you right click and save as? Can you give us an example of a download and location that will not give you a choice as to where to download to?

When I click on a download, I get the option to run or save. I choose save, and a window opens so I can choose where to save it.

Just to add to the above, it sounds like you're downloading an executable or zip file via the following method.

1) Clicking the link online
2) Choosing Run instead of Save 'Therefore causing it to download to a temporary internet files folder'
3) The program runs once no problem but resides at the temporary location c:\xxxxxxxxx\xxx\xx\x\x\x etc... until temp files are cleared. Making it hard to rerun the program should it be needed.

If the programs you're downloading have an installer application then you need to download that.

If they dont you need to save the files .zip or .exex etc.. somewhere more esy to find i.e My Docs c:\Program Files\program name\etc...
You can then add a shortcut link into the Programs folder to make running the app easier

Ooh ok. So some programs don't install and have to be ran each time like a new download?
It doesn't give me an option to change location of download like in XP. Should I view hidden folders, go find it and drag it to folder I want?

Still info provided is not clear.
If you use IE to download any file, you are greeted with a dialog box containing Run, Save and Cancel.
If you want to save the installer for future uses or for any other computers, you can click on Save. Once clicked, you will be greeted with a browse folder dialog where you can specify the location to get it saved. Once saved, you will again be greeted with a dialog to open or cancel. If you want to run the installer, you can click on run. Or click cancel, browse to the folder where you have saved the file and run the installer.

If you do not wish to save the installer, the you can click on run. This way, the installer is first downloaded and saved in your temp folder. Once the temp folder is cleared, the installer you downloaded will also get deleted.

If you use firefox or any other browser, there is a option to auto save to a specific location you specify. By default, they all save the files to your document/downloads folder.

Gonna show you guys how I do it, I believe CPU-Z didn't install into my system and I had to unzip each time.

YES NO

I clicked yes, and the program popped up, it never "installed" or anything like programs usually do under program files... it just ran... if this way continues, it means it has to be unzipped each time and ran from exe to be used. Also, why can't I change the location of where it's being downloaded on the hard drive, it makes it go to the temp folder without letting me edit that option.

Ok, in this case, you'd want to create a new folder in your program files folder (for example) called CPUZ. Now when you right click on the Rar file on your desktop, chose Extract Files. The destination window will open. Navigate to your new CPUZ folder, and chose it to extract files to.

CPUZ is perhaps a bad example. This program does not install, rather the exe runs when you click on it.
