Reinstall Problem

Hi there.

So a few weeks ago my computer crashed and hasn't been able to boot properly ever since, eventually giving me that awful BOOTMGR MISSING error amongst other issues. I tried a lot of things but nothing was working and, since I pretty much had everything saved elsewhere, I decided to cut my losses and do a fresh reinstall from a copy I made.

Unfortunately I'm even having trouble with this. I have no issues deleting the partition and getting to the point where the system is actually trying to install, but every time it gets to the "Expanding Windows Files" task it can't get past zero percent. It sticks there for a few minutes before giving me an error message telling me it can't install. The first time I got this error it said it was missing a required CD/DVD device driver. I see in the troubleshooting sticky that there are suggestions for dealing with this, but I didn't see them until after I tried reinstalling a second time. On this second attempt I got a different error message with the code 0x80070002. It said nothing about the CD/DVD device driver this time, only saying something vague about it not being able to install.

So is this still a driver issue? Should I take the advice from the sticky? Is the hard drive just shot? I'm kind of at a loss at this point.

Thanks,

-James

That problem could very well be caused by the disc. Did you copy it yourself at a speed of 4x or slower ?

It was a while ago but I believe so. I usually burn everything at a slow speed for exactly this reason.

Do you happen to have an external DVD drive that you could try? sometimes a different DVD drive will discs that aren't working on the normal drive. Something to try anyway...

Good idea, but no, I don't have an external DVD drive. Would it be possible to run it from an external storage drive (which I DO have)? If so, is that something worth trying?

Confirm the ISO integrity and burn another DVD using ImgBurn at 4x speed with Verify.

Next try writing ISO to flash stick using UltraISO trial version: On File tab select Open ISO or DVD, on Bootable select Write Disk Image. Format, Write. Boot under USB, REmovable or HD's.

Yes, if you can copy your DVD to a storage drive, then yes you can install from that drive as well. Windows also makes a utility to install the DVD drive to a USB stick...which works very well. I'll have to track down the link to that software. Maybe someone else has it handy already. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the ideas, but I'm really starting to think I'm looking at a mechanical failure of some kind. I tried this:

But during the "clean all" process it seemed to lock up. I knew this process takes a while but when the cursor stopped flashing and the CPU fan started going nuts I figured something was wrong.

The CPU fan had done this before, just got loud for 30 seconds and then went back to normal, but never repeatedly like it was doing now. I just checked it and it's pretty clean, and I hear that CPUs rarely fail, so I'm worried that this is all a motherboard issue. It was suggested to me to boot an Ubuntu live disc and see what happens. So I suppose I will try that next, but please let me know if you have other thoughts.

Thank.
