Solved reinstall Windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5307

HiI recently retired my wife's Tosh C660, like the OP it was slowing down, even with 6GB ram.
Now to throw another spanner in the works >>I would have only installed the 32bit versionbased on those last 2 screenshots, and OP's comments got a funny feeling the Linux install has corrupted the NTFS format or the Rufus settings are wrong Yeah, I figured out/thought Linus must have changed something, I guess that's why the reccomend not putting Linux on the same drive as windows. If the computer can mount 2 hd I will do a separate install for each on diff hds, unfortunately this Toshiba won't accept 2 hds but I think my HP does.
when/if you have completed your install please run this command (C:\Windows\system32>fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c)
C:\Windows\system32>fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c:
Version should be 3.1 I've got it up and running win7 now, I did have to remove the usb when it rebooted the first time, I thought I should but I figured it would tell me to remove all media before restarting. I did install 64 bit, Do I need to run sys32-fsutil fsinfo ntfs info)? Do older windows systems use a diff NTFS? What is Macrium?
I'm not entirely sure your OS will function correctly, might be you have ti install again
OP >>>> you should have deleted partitions 2/3, then i would also have formatted the remaining partition, this would have changed/updated it to a supported version, then install I deleted all partitions and had formated inside the istall process so the NTFS would be right. Do older windows systems use a diff NTFS?
(no point in keeping it/them -- just install Macrium and create an image when the install is complete)

The new install did not install/find drivers for the internet, I used to have a usb dongle that I cannot find that would bi pass the Realtek installed since Linux 18 did not support it. Ho do I fix this?

Thanks so much, it's been so long since I did any of this but hopefully it's coming back. This forum has been a blessing to me. Mike

mike, please run that command, does it show v3.1

Dynabook bought the "legacy" Toshiba company, the website for it has the wifi drivers, depends on which card you have
Atheros or Realtek, but likely out of date

open device manager,- Network, or could be under unknown and post the pci-vend details
Details tab - hardware

Here's the way I have dual boot Linux Lite and Win7 on the same drive, separate partitions. Basically you install Grub Boot-loader and Linux on the same partition, you do not permit grub boot-loader to overwrite Win Boot Manager, that way an update to windows won't corrupt your boot-loader

I also used EasyBCD to setup dual boot screen Win 7 & Linux, pointing Windows to Grub.

Yes, I would do a complete backup of your drive. Trust me from my experience, it is fairly easy to make a mistake, more than once! :sleepy:

Well,I think I got it running pretty good. The internet was very slow I'm thinking because it was using an ancient version of win explorer so I dl google chrome on it was much better. I then tried to update windows and it wouldn't so I googled around and found this https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=43434 and ran it and then downloaded 169 updates and installed them. I think the windows updater was to old of a version to work. No to learn win 7 again after all these years. Thanks everyone, you've been a great help. Mike

Glad to hear your computer is running.
Simplix Update Pack is recommended by SevenForum members for Win7 updates.
Run UpdatePack7R2 to download an up-to-date Simplix file. Simplix is a single file (880MB) that contain all updates since Win 7 was released to date. It has all security and non security updates without the trash (telemetry and tracking).

Regarding the dual boot. Make sure you do a complete disk backup, read my blue text footer. You will most likely make a mistake the first time, as I did. If you do boo boo, you can reimage your drive from the backup.
I have an external HDD that I use for backups
I also use and recommend AOMEI Backupper, also recommended by SevenForums.
Quite often AOMEI offers a free Pro key, yes from AOMEI not a hack.

Okay, I downloaded Simplex and tried to run it and it needs 10gb to run. When I set up this hhd I installed Win 7 in it's own 30gb partition to keep my data in a separate partition because I thought that was the safest/best way but now there is not enuf run to run Simplex. Did I do wrong? This hhd is 1000gb so the rest is usnused. What is the best way to proceed and should I not have installed Win7 in its own partition Thanks, Mike

Your Windows partition is a little small.
