Solved Remove "Get Windows 10" from taskbar

Shutting down GWX.exe from the task manager did the trick. It will probably come back if I restart it.
I was just worried it was malware or a virus because ive been downloading cracks for my cellphone and avg detected a virus a couple days ago.

Well I'm going to reformat windows right now even if it's legit. It's been almost 2 years since reformatting.

I didn't install those updates but you might try removing it from the Notifications.

Right click the Task Bar, select Properties.
On the Taskbar tab, look for Notification area and click on Customize.
Scroll through the notification and see if W10 shows up. If it does, give it a no-show.

What update is it? I will uninstall it!

Yes it is called GWX & it probably stands for:

Get Windows X. The X being Roman numeral for 10

I have hidden the icon from the task bar. I don't want Windows 10 at present & when I do I will try & get a DVD to install it rather that download it as it will very likely overrun my monthly download limit. Once my download limit is overrun it goes back to dial up speed.

I have a list of updates not to install, you are being nagged because you installed an update that will nag you to upgrade to W10 when it comes out.

See if I can dig it up here, as I`m on a Windows 10 system right now.

Yep, you also installed the update, it`s either been a recent one or one that popped up a few moths ago, but it`s on my list.

I guess if you reserve it now you`ll be upgraded to Windows 10 when the day comes.

Unless you`ve tried the preview, you`ll be in for a big surprise

I installed the last remaining KB from the list just to get this one going.

As it seems GWX.exe is started by few Scheduled Task entries. When I tried to disable them I got a permission warning.

Maybe someone can come up with another solution (involving disabling these tasks) for those who want to keep it installed but get rid of the nags?

Run Task Scheduler - Microsoft - Windows - Setup - GWXTriggers
Also a gwx entry under same Setup.

It is forever (forever being the lifetime of the device), you have one year to claim the free upgrade.

I haven't gotten any nag screens on my Windows 8.1 desktop but got this when I opened Windows update.

In an early morning before-coffee haze, I went ahead and reserved my Win 10 upgrade. Now I regret it and would prefer to go the ISO route. According to the Win 10 Q&A page, I should be able to 'cancel the reservation at any time'. However, when I do that, I have no option to cancel. Is anyone out there seeing an option to cancel?

I think its just a glitch. Anyway, that should fix it for you.

Why not keep the reservation, especially if you have more than one computer to update.

When you update, a install.esd file is downloaded and is the source for the update. You can then use the ESDtoISO tool to create an ISO from it then burn a DVD or make a flash drive to install from.

That's what most folks are doing with the current Windows 10 Technical Preview.

Only the bottom 5 apply to win-10 as far as I've noticed.

What I'm wondering is how many programs will I have to replace that won't be compatible with Windows 10. I'm running 7 and it's going pretty smoothly. Why rock my boat?

Just as carwiz says, go into customize and turn the "Get Windows 10" notifications off. No need to panic or uninstall updates.

I have tried to stop it popping up via the "Hide icon and notifications icon" but it just keeps coming back. I have tried deleting the folder GWX but I get the error message that I need permission from "TrustedInstaller"
