Resolution Error "Out of Range" 16:9 Games

Hey guys, I recently downloaded Metro 2033 on steam. It made my computer go "Out of range" even when I rebooted, So I called a technician over to fix it and I think he did a clean reinstall of the OS. It worked after that but now I can't seem to play any games and I can't go back to resolutions such as 1280x720. I've used 1280x720 when playing an old game called "Sniper Elite" and it just goes out of range for most resolutions. Any Suggestions?

Please post your pc specifications. We are unable to help you if we don't know what hardware do you have (CPU, RAM, graphics card, motherboard...).

What monitor do you have?
Are your audio/video drivers updated?

Please list your system specs, especially the video card and monitor, specifically need to know the native resolution of the monitor.

BTW I have Metro 2033 on Steam and run it at my monitor's native resolution of 1920 x 1080. That said, please make sure you have the latest video card drivers installed.

Also, you didn't need someone the reinstall the OS for this issue unless you have some other things going on. I suspect the out of range error is either driver, or an incorrect resolution setting, neither of which should have required an OS reinstall.

Also be aware that your resolution changes should be done in game, not through the monitor. If you're doing this through the monitor, this is most probably why you're getting out of range errors.

This is typically a refresh rate issue. I have seen this happen a couple times where the game starts up and sets the wrong refresh causing this issue.

As mentioned we need system specs to help you further as theres a few ways to go about fixing it.


Without specs, here are few things you may try:
1. In your graphics card control Panel, make sure the refresh rate in the dispaly section is set correctly. Most commonly, its 60. but this will depend on the monitor you have. This will likely be OK, as its usually a issue with the game setting things wrong on 1st launch, but it is worthwhile to check this first.

2. If you have a choice of starting in DX9 or DX10/11 ,try starting in DX9 and set the resolution/refresh in game. The try launching in DX10/11. This will not always work, but does with certain games.

3. You may also need to manually edit the ini file for your resolution/refresh.

4. Start the game in windowed mode then make the appropriate settings in game, and set to full screen afterwards.

With steam, most games can be forced to start Windows by Right Clicking the game in the library. Choose Properties. Then click launch option and add this line:
"-windowed" without quotes.

3. You may also need to manually edit the ini file for your resolution/refresh.

I think we're getting a bit complicated here though I do agree with checking that the correct refresh rate is used by the monitor. In fact, that should be the first thing looked at, as well as making the monitor is using the latest drivers, then check that the video card has the latest drivers.

And, as stated, make sure any resolution changes are done in-game, not on the monitor!

Out of sync errors are usually associated with the monitor's refresh rate or resolution not being set correctly. Why does my monitor display a "Sync. Out of Range" error message?

Okay guys, I can play most of my Steam games fine which include Garry's Mod, CounterStrikeSource, Red Orchestra 2 etc. I can do the edit .ini for most games but not all.

Here are my specs:

Current Display Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (59Hz)
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor

I hope this is enough. I also can't go to 800x600 resolution, and i'm wondering if 1920x1080 can go 800x600.

Please re-read my posts. And we can't do anything for you until you get the driver for your monitor. Generic PnP Monitor says you have no drivers installed for the monitor, and that could be one of the main things contributing to your issue.

Get the drivers for the monitor and let us know how it goes.

All you need to do now is open your device manager. (Just type it in the search box of the start menu).

In the section for Monitors, expand it and right click your monitor and choose Update Driver Software.
On the next screen choose manual.

Point it to the driver folder on the CD that came with the monitor.

I do not have the CD.

Not trying to be funny but you're going to have to do a little bit of work and research to get your issue fixed. We can't log into your computer and do it for you.

The first thing you need to do is go to the manufacture of the monitor, locate the model and find the drivers for it. Download them, click the exe and follow the instructions.

Hey I went to this site (http://www.lg.com/us/support). I clicked downloads, computer products, monitors, and other. I searched for my model number. M227WAP and I can't find it. Any tips?
