Outside of that section with the folder names above "Move to folder," what is wrong with it?

They are going to kill it completely! :)

If you mean "kill the ribbon" then I say "What are they waiting for?"

Put the darn thing out of my misery.

There is nothing wrong with it per se, but a massive number of users wont accept it. There are already very large numbers of users who wont use various products with ribbon menus. I know quite a few.

Various arguments that users must "move on" or "learn new things", simply wont wash. Software should do what a user wants and not what some firm, or indeed anybody else, thinks he should be doing.

If Ford made a car that only drove backwards at thirty miles an hour, and with completely different controls to the one you have, which you were unable to get used to, but designed and (almost) guaranteed to be completely accident free, would you buy it?

I don't have an opinion about it at this point.

I was merely asking for more details about yours, since they were scarce to begin with. That's all.

...Software should do what a user wants and not what some firm, or indeed anybody else, thinks he should be doing....

There are millions upon millions of users of Windows, doing everything, every single user wants is impossible. Catering to the larger user base is what any firm will do. Lets face it the larger user base like the Ribbon.

But really until we have a product to look at, it is all speculation.

Actually your car anaolgy fails. Cars in fact do this ALL the time. Whitness the push button starter and the "climate control system" which are both pretty much disasters of user control over their vehicle. :)

But anyway, You can of course always replace explorer with any number of third party shells for those that truly want some real customizability. Personally, It takes up too much space for me. As long as there is a show hide button (and it looks like there may be at the top there), it shouldn't be a problem at all really.

They better at least get some better icons cause the orange cirlces = ugly.

As for the ribbon itself, I really hope theres an option to disable it by default because I wont want to download 3rd party that I know will come out to get the old style back.

Well, I only have scarce details on the matter itself. My opinion on ribbon menus is that I don't like them, and I don't like the trouble they cause me when some user complains and demands I get the "rubbish" removed and his system working how he wants it to again.

I also don't see the point in Microsoft annoying large portions of its user base by adding "functionality" that only annoys and confuses them.

Otherwise I'm more or less neutral........... :)

Indeed I am one of them. Do Not Want. I really do not see what developers have against "File Edit" etc, that they feel the need to hide them away. Are they really that offensive? I find their presence to be reassuring, I know where everything is, and I don't have to learn a complete new UI on a developers whim.

Even Firefox, who for years had my business for the major reason that they used an Old School GUI, with Firefox 4 have succumbed to pressure and hidden those nasty offensive little words away. At least it can be turned off though. (Yes I know it can probably be turned off in other apps too, but frankly I would rather not have to)

Having said all that, in the interests of fairness, I should say that the name "Ribbon" conjures up for me images of the horrible Office (2000? I think it was) interface, when the ribbon was new, and was a complete and utter mess when your used to doing it the old way. Wheras the Ribbon in the screenshots provided, don't look that bad. It seems to me that they have just moved the sidebar up top. It's not really "cutting into screen real estate" as it is redistributing it.

I shall reserve judgement for now, it may not even happen, but I wish they picked another name for it. the word "Ribbon" still gives me nightmares

I don't like the ribbon interface much in Office, I find it harder for me to find things. Some things are much easier, some things are harder. But that doesn't mean that I am not accepting it and not moving forward, I used Office 2007 and Office 2010...there are just some things about them which I don't find ideal. I also don't see the need and benefits of Windows transparencies, but they are there.

The ribbon interface arrived with Office 2007, BTW.

I like the ribbon on MS Office 2007 and 2010 and also on Windows 7's Wordpad and Paint, I find it quite useful, BUT for Windows Explorer, I completely don't want a ribbon interface, like what was said, its unattractive, I'd rather stick to what Windows Explorer looks like on Windows 7. If they are gonna put that feature, better have it disabled by default and yes those orange circles equals ugly, don't want it.

I immediately had bad some bad views about Windows 8 when I saw the ribbon interface for Windows Explorer a few days ago. Most people would hate it so take it off.

I'll be honest I've gotten quite used to the ribbon that's been slowly introduced to us since Office 2007 and actually quite like it.

It'd be interesting to see how well it works in explorer though. I see a very "cloud" based OS in Windows 8 ;)
