Running a new program on Windows 7???

I have been a Quicken user since the 1990s - yeah, it has been a while. When I tried running it today, I was informed "Quicken cannot load this page because WebView2 Runtime is not Installed." No big deal - download the installer and run it.

However, when I tried to run the installer, I was told "The procedure entry point GetPackageFamilyName could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."

What the blazes can I do? Must I find a Quicken alternative that runs on Windows 7? This issue is one of the reasons why I will not downgrade to Windows 10 or 11 - What valid reason is there for a program that runs locally to access the net?

I do have a 2024 offline installer for WebView2 that I know works on Win7, but I don't think that's really your problem. I think WebView2 is only needed to display internet content, and the real problem is the way Quicken (and many other "modern" programs) insist on being connected to the internet all the time, even for something as simple as displaying help files.

No such problem with my Quicken 2002. It doesn't ever connect to internet resources. Is there possibly a slightly older version of Quicken that will still meet your current needs but not require a constant internet connection?

Personally, I've been using Quicken since ver.4 for DOS (1990). I currently use Quicken 2002 on Win7, and for me I've found no reason to update. I actually have the installers for Quicken 2004, 2006, 2011, and 2013, but kept coming back to 2002 because it was simpler and the later versions just kept adding bells and whistles I didn't want, with the consequent muddying of the user interface.

As for alternatives to Quicken that are compatible with Win7, I think you'll find few that would be as good as even a very old version of Quicken, so I still think your best bet would be reverting to a few-years-old version of Quicken if you can make that work. If not, I've heard people touting Microsoft Money now that Microsoft has abandoned it and released the final version free, so you might want to consider that. (Look for "Microsoft Money Sunset Edition").

dg1261 - Thanks for the reply. If you would please point me to the '2024 offline installer for WebView2 that I know works on Win7', that would be great for me to try first. If that doesn't work, I guess I could try to find an old version of Quicken to use, but my concern would be importing my current Quicken file into it. Needless to say, if I get Quicken working again, I need to make sure that I have auto-updates turned off.

Why dont you use an older version of Quicken?

Dimitris - An older version would be fine, but I cannot seem to find any installation discs/files. Could you point me to one?

Two other questions:

1. Must the existing program first be uninstalled before installing an older version?
2. Will the existing QDF file open or must something be done to get the data into the older version?
