Runtime error C drive Windows Explorer

I have had Windows explorer crash on me and then an error screen come up.

Is this normal performance for Windows?

Any number of things can cause this type of error. Update the runtime by following the instructions here.

Also use the System File Checker.

After these steps, please post your results here.

Well I tried the first option - not so good. Too many options and I am not too sure which one to choose.

If you could assist this poor beginner - that would be great.

I have now come up with a locked file on my External USB Hard Disk Drive - you did not tell me that - I have not completed the install. I am worried about what I am doing. I do not trust Windows.

Sorry, I was not in the forum for several hours so could not reply. I see you have taken the issue to another posting and are getting help there. The problem with the Runtime installation was not something anyone could have predicted. Please remember you are dealing with other users not Microsoft or any company; we volunteer information that has been gleaned from experience and can't possibly anticipate every outcome. That said, I hope you have better luck with the System File Checker, as I recommended you use that after the Runtime update. Good luck and please update your post with your results.

PS: The flag icons are helpful in that they show you where a post is coming from. As you can see, I am in the USA, so with you in Australia, our "uptime" hours are very different! IE, I was likely sleeping while you were moving on with the issues.

Dear Member - Alex,

I am sure that you were asleep - as I am not that perfect. Hence on here a lot and getting told not to touch some modules - do not spologise. I understand that you are in a different time zone, that is why I like the profile set up that you can select your time zone.

I know that you are not physically able to be able to see what is on my computer and this is just a 'forum' where people volunteer assistance and I guess warned about anything that may be risky to the operation of their computer.
If that risky - do not do it until you know what you are doin - I have learnt that the hard way.
I am persisant - hence getting a correct diagnosis of my health issues.

You have been of great assistance and I now know a bit more about my Runtime error - thank you.

Please again do not apologise - I am just a silly old person.

Melissa, thanks heaps for your kind message. Although I have been a PC support tech for over 25 years, I am new to this forum, gradually figuring out how things work here, so this has been a good learning experience. For example, I had forgotten how something like that Microsoft C++ download could be troublesome for a user unfamiliar with such things. And I now know better than to suggest something fairly serious like that just before hitting the sack, when I should remain online for any follow up questions or concerns. Anyway, I'm heading over to your other post to see how this thing turned out. BTW you're not silly at ALL -- like anyone you just want your system to work right and it can be very upsetting when things go haywire.

I am terribly sorry. I am new to this forum too. I am a very pedantic person and am trying to learn how, when, what and why of what happens with the computer. Perhaps this is not the way to go,

I am an answer based person. I am also very ill. You assisted me greatly and I am the silly stupid one. I feel bad. I am just glad I figured out how to do screen shots and I remember to tell the people on the forum about everything that I see on the screen and give as much detail as possible.

I have learnt a very big lesson.

You can not be expected to be on here 24/7. You require rest and relaxation. Even though for a geek like me, that is going on a computer.

Again, no need to fell sorry, stupid, or silly... it's all to learn, yes? I'm very ill too, and have only recently found that it can be therapeutic to work with folks in forums like this. FYI your screen shots were very helpful -- it's just that I saw them much later, some 10 hours after you posted. Anyway, did you have any luck with the SFC system file checker? Hope so. If I may say so, you are much too hard on yourself... and I know how that can be. Not to worry, I feel we've more than clarified things and it's all okay.

Now I can repay the favour.

Go to User CP up the top of the forum and down the side it has the option for private messages.

I only discovered this the other day and how to put an avatar etc on my profile.

I hope that your diagnosis is not like mine. I am writing a book. Best to look at the positive side of everthing. I have been through too much. Hence too hard on myself and beat myself up about messages on my computer and thinking that it may blow up.

I know that you can send me a message - hopefully you can do that - or I will delete some others. Many people think I require assistance.
