Same problem...

I posted a thread about this, 2-3hrs ago, but I can't find it now, so I'll make a new thread.

I tried making a screen-shot so that you could see the problem but everything on it came out okay. The screen-shot was normal and it failed to show the problem.

Here's the problem: the screen in front of me has become overly elongated and it curves inwardly (left and right sides). Furthermore, every window that I open has an inwardly curve to it.

I've been trying to fix this for the last 2-3hrs to no avail. Please help!

PS: I even reinstalled the OS. Nothing helps.

sounds like a physical adjustment problem with your screen. That's why the screenshot is normal. Check the adjustment controls on your monitors/screen.

To post a screen you try a snip.
Just hit start, and in search box type snip.

Highlight the area you want & save it. Then upload here as a attachment, as seen in snip 1 below.

Also, please fill in your specs the best you can so we know more about the setup what we are dealing with, so we can better advise a possible solution.

I switched my OS to Ubuntu because the problem started on that OS. I would really like to use Windows 7 (I bought it yesterday) but I was playing around with the monitor setting and I really messed things up. Hence, the switch to another OS.

My monitor is a, hp pavilion mx703. There's a setting (I think it's the one that should help my situation the most) that's called "pincushion," which is on 51, but when I try to move it, it does nothing.

I read somewhere that maybe my monitor is dying. How do I know for sure?

The simplest way is if you have access to another PC or monitor known to be good:

1.) First things first, reset the monitor to its default settings. (this may help)
2.) Hook the monitor up to another PC. See if the problem persists.
-->If No.. then the issue is something to do with other hardware, not the monitor. (Could even be the cable itself)
--> If Yes, then theres a possibility the monitor is bad. (or again cable if same one was used)

if the monitor works fine on another PC, then try took hook up a different monitor to yours.
If that monitor does the same as yours, then possibly a graphics card or other hardware issue.

Again, sorry about that. Hope it helps, anyway.

Do you have a setting in your monitors options to reset all setting to Factory Specifications Or Default?

You mentioned you think you changed a setting which caused this.

ASsuming the monitor itself is good:
If all 4 edges are bowed in or out, adjust the pincushion to set them back normally.

The easiest thing to do however is reset to default, and adjust from there, if you are unsure exactly what all you have changed.

One thing I've noticed is that when I move one side of an open window towards the middle of the screen, the curve straightens, and when I move it towards, say, the left side (all the way), the curve/straight line (depending on the position) starts to curve outwardly (from an inner curve to an outer one).

Have you got a Degauss button ? If so press that. It'll make your screen appear to shake.
You then need to adjust your pincushion settings (the one at -51 I'm guessing, first).

Degaussing is the process of decreasing or eliminating an unwanted magnetic field.

Wishmaster, everything is on default. The resolution has improved but the problem persists.

I guess that means I need a new monitor?

Lasy B, I just tried that. Pincushion doesn't do anything. Pincushion balance, on the other hand, just screws things up even more.

I think I need a new monitor. Thanks for all your help, everyone!

Your monitor is pretty old, and by your description, sounds like it's about to fail.. I've seen the same kind of thing on other monitors and TVs. But, until you try connecting a different monitor to see if the problem persists you won't know for sure. The good news is CRT monitors can be had almost free ($5-$25) these days if you check some of your local computer shops. Don't go to a big box store, just find a place that sells used computers.

My recommendation is to go ahead and get a new monitor anyway. Even if it turns out there's nothing wrong with the one you have and it's another issue, like insufficient power to your graphics card, it never hurts to have a spare on lying around.. or better yet.. just use both of them.
