Seagate external

OK, posts following in succession and I can't keep pace with.

Just cancel quick scan. Your partition window should still stay. Hilight it and double click on it and tell me whether you can see all the files and folders.

Then put a tick mark in the square Window in front of the highlighted partition and
then post a screenshot. I want to see whether it makes any changes on the preview disk map at the bottom.

i didn't see anything. Could it be nothing showed after double clicking because scan was cancelled early. I wonder.

No, it had found the only partition already the full size of 2794.52 GB ( you can read all the columns) and that is why I asked you cancel the scan.

When selected it shows as a Bad disk. not a good sign anyway or I am missing something.

I shall now take a break and come back again after about half an hour or so with some screenshots on what you should try.

hmmmm.......I went through all the posts in this thread trying to find out where you and me went wrong.

I was wrong in assuming your 3TB drive was a GPT drive. - TestDisk threw out an error message that woke me up to the fact that could be an Advance formatted MBR disk. Saving grace no harm done.

You went wrong when specific instruction was given not to write anything. At one point you did give a write command but again TestDisk saved you by giving a write error and not writing anything.

But one Himalayan blunder seems to have toppled the cart crushing out everything.

My instructions in post#2 in the very beginning itself:

"I shall straight away get into Data Recovery mode using Test Disk. You must have an empty formatted drive of adequate capacity connected to copy all data into it. If that drive does not have sufficient capacity then you have to select only the important files and copy those to it when we come to that ( and if we come to it :D. Yep, Data Recovery is a dirty job with results unpredictable, except in most simple cases.)"

The most important instruction was in bold letters. But you went ahead without connecting an external and being ready to copy at the first instance. If only you had an external connected you could have straightaway copied all the files shown by TestDisk (post #28 dated 09 March 2015) and everything would have ended on a happy note. (Sitting at a distance I can't prevent anything.:))

From the RAW condition when the data could have been read and copied, the HDD had regressed to the unknown, not initialized , unallocated condition with Partition Wizard showing it as Read only and Bad disk which perhaps indicates that the HDD was overwhelmed by a deluge of bad sectors and the drive controller shut off the HDD. Now I have formulated my strategy to be adopted in future :). If I feel that the OP has to get into Data recovery mode, I will not indicate how I want to go about it, which program I want to use etc., until the OP is ready with an empty HDD to copy it. :) With a faulty HDD anything can happen at anytime and in any case the OP will require a replacement HDD.

With this preamble, I can still say we have atleast in one instance in SevenForums have successfully recovered data from a Read only, Bad disk HDD shown by PW.Whether it will work in this case or not is a million dollar question but that is the last option.

Now just download Getdataback simple here https://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm run it and check whether it shows all your data. If it does show, you have to buy it to copy the data shown. You can see some screenshots here http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware...nclosure-suddenly-became-raw.html#post3034678

Before you run this just post the screenshot of your new 3TB HDD in Partition Wizard which you say you had formatted as GPT, for me to check and clear.

Ok i think it is getting more difficult now and i do blame myself for all of this.

I am coming to the idea of giving up. I wonder it is possible to clean format this corrupt drive and use the same drive again for storage?

1. Your new 3TB drive formatted with Windows Disk Management appears perfectly OK with the 128MB MSR partition in place.( This will not be shown in Windows Disk Management.Reason why I wanted to see it in Partition Wizard.)

2. It would appear that Sector 0 the all important sector has gone corrupt in the faulty drive.

3. We may still try to visualize what is exactly there by viewing its content in bootice at sector level, save it and then try to rewrite a new MBR code.

But before we do anything the integrity of the drive has to be tested. That will also give as an idea whether the drive turning bad is only due a corrupted sector 0 alone or bad sectors all the way in the data area. If there are too many bad sectors it will indicate so. But if it finds only few and can repair those then the drive will be good to go and we can attempt to rebuild sector 0 at the sector level or initialize the disk in Windows Disk management.

Download , install and run Seatools for Windows from here SeaTools | Seagate

Also read the Seatools for Windows Guide in that page on how to use it. ( I haven't run Seatools for ages and so I may not be of any help.) Run the Short Generic Test and then the Long Generic Test with Repair option "all" selected. Short generic test may take only some time while the Long Generic test on 3TB may take hours. Also note the time taken. If it all finishes within seconds in a jiffy then it would mean that the tests did not really run due to hardware fault even though it may indicate a PASS result (false positive).

Post the findings. I am not the one to give up easily. I will use all the arrows in my quiver but it is going to be a long process and needs perseverance and willingness to experiment.( All this only if the integrity test passes.)

"2. It would appear that Sector 0 the all important sector has gone corrupt in the faulty drive."

I have a feeling you are close/very close to where the problem is located on the faulty drive.

Got to thank you for your time and effort with this stubborn drive.

Let me download seatools now and follow your instructions.
