OK I have a HP Pavillion m8400f Desktop with Windows Vista 32bit. I have the retail windows 7 upgrade Home Premium. I have read all the forums and just need an answer.

I transferred my old files using the east transfer file program to my external hard drive (Windows Vista).

Now should I do a clean installation or custom installation of windows 7 and then transfer the files from the external drive of Windows Vista to windows 7.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Clean make sure that the vista version is the same as win 7 (ie Pro vista>>>pro win 7) Clean install is much better. It is recommended by MS and most of us here

Take Kens advice and one more. Do not insert your key until you are installed and satisfied. In addition when asked for the key, uncheck the box that asks if you want automatic activation. You have 3o days to activate. Make sure you are happy, then activate. You can get up to 120 days to activate, but that should not be necessary.

I do have windows vista home premium and windows 7 is the same.

I will let you know how things go with the installation and then the easy tranfer from old to new program.

Re: Installing Windows 7/Easy Transfer File Problem

Ok have probelms with the Easy Transfer File program. Per Vista downloaded using Easy Transfer from the Vista program to my External Drive (K as old computer. Downloaded w/o problems.

Loaded Windows 7 as a clean installation on same computer. First updated drivers/windows update. All good! Next transferred the files from the external drive using Easy Transfer from the Windows 7. Found the files located in the old computer file. From what I have read, I have to individually pin to start menu or use set.exe to load these programs to my computer?

Problem is with the set.exe pertaining to Microsoft works. Will not set up. Click on the set.exe, all I get is a flash on the screen and nothing more. Some of the programs I just pinned to the start menu and they worked fined. Some of HP programs pinned to start menu loaded and others did not.

Question: So I have to manually set these programs up correct from the old computer file?

If this is correct then I rather do a dule boot. Have 2 hard drives both 350GB each. Now would it make a difference which one is installed 1st? Any comments on doing a dule boot such as pros or cons?

If I understand you correctly, you did a clean install.

If that is true, you have to reinstall your programs from scratch.

If you insist on dual boot, there is a preference as to which should be installed first, but I am not sure which it is.
