SFC will not complete

Hi There,
We have a fairly new machine with Windows 7 home premium. The OS is installed on a solid state drive and for some reason, we can't run a SFC successfully. we run as an adminstrator from the command prompt and get to 19% and then get "windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them"
We get the same in safe mode but with the addition of the notification "There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again". Of course that doesn't help.
Can anyone help please?
Thanks
Paul

Well I tried the windows upgrade repair and that kind of worked.
After the repair I tried the sfc /scannow and it completed 100% without asking for the disk but still came up with:
"windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them"
Any more thoughts please?
Thanks
Paul

Thanks and I will try that tomorrow but I wonder why the repair didn't replace all of the files and SFC still found errors?

Depending on the type of corruption and of which files SFC cannot always repair them all. If after three runs it still reports errors your next option is a repair install

Thanks for all helping me. I tried SFC 3 times and still came up with the error. I tried to access the log file but I dont have permission to open it. I thought it might be useful to see what files were corrupt before doing a repair install. What do you think please?

Run this command. It will show you the cbs.log

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log

I thought you said you did a Repair Install. Isn't that why you asked why it could not repair files which SFC found corrupt?

If SFC cannot repair System files when run 3 times from Command Line as Bill suggested, then the next step is a Repair Install. SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot

If a Repair Install cannot fix it then you may have serious corruption requiring wiping the HD (of boot code) and clean reinstall. This is a much superior install to factory OEM with all of the corrupting preinstalled bloatware:
Clean Install Windows 7
Clean Reinstall Windows 7 Factory OEM
Diskpart Clean Command
DISKPART At PC Startup

How is overall performance? What problems do you have?

The System File Checker (sfc) can only repair files of which it has a copy in the 'mirror' - and those are only essential system files.

With the installation/repair disc you can only repair files that are on that disc.

But if you have e.g. a corrupted .dll that came with a program that you installed later, it will not have a copy of that and cannot repair it. Note that this .dll may be even used by programs that you installed later. So the origin of the .dll may not be obvious.

Sorry I did do a repair install, got my terminology wrong and got confused when a later post suggested this when I had already done it. I tried to access the log. It's there but the string suggested didn't work, it just went back to C:. The machine seems quite fast and it starts and shuts down ok, but my partner says it does some strange things from time to time so that's why I did a SFC. I guess I could just leave it but I just wanted to get SFC working and the machine free of so called corrupted files. If its a corrupted program dll then it would be nice to know which program it's from so that I can reinstall it.

That is strange. The findstr always works - at least for me. Are you sure you ran cmd as admin.

If its a corrupted program dll then it would be nice to know which program it's from so that I can reinstall it.

That is a tough call. .dlls are 'public' subroutines that any program can use. If you are lucky, you may find out with Process Explorer. You have to investigate the svchost.exes when this .dll is running. It would be in Properties of the svchost.exe > Services tab. But since there will be several svchost.exes, you will have to use the method of elimination. Just hover over them and you get a first idea what they are running.

Yes, the characters must be exact. You can get the brackets from the Character Map even if your keyboard doesn't have them.

Start> In search box type Character Map> Enter

Find the brackets and type in the correct characters

6zbjgp.jpg

Clicking the left bracket brings up the text in the lower left, in this case, U+005B

Hi A guy,
Ok that worked with the right brackets in it but I don't seem to be able to copy and paste it or to save it say in Wordpad. If I could do that, can i post it and ask you to check it to see if there are any obvious issues?
Thanks
Paul

Hi A Guy,
Just ran SFC /verifyonly and got "windows resource protection found integrity violations. Details are included in CBS.log windir\logs\cbs\cbs.log"
I managed to save the log and it's attached.
Can you spot anything?
Thanks
Paul
