Shutdown + closing laptop lid

matejdro, why don't you disassemble your laptop and remove the switch that detects when the laptop is closed? I bet that fixes your problem. Just be aware that you will void any warranty and risk damaging something while in there resulting in problems you'll really be bothered by.

This IS a REAL issue

Why would an operating system require it's users to know that they are not allowed by the IT gods to close the lid whilst the laptop is busy shutting down. If a shut down is already in progress the sleep command should be disabled. I actually think this is a BIOS issue not a windows issue.

In a school where 30 kids are trying to cram their laptops back into the charging cart before the end of the lesson this is a huge issue as the kids who need to use the laptops aftertham have to wait fot the laptops to finish shutting down from last time them have to wait for another boot. This is especcially an issue on Atom 1GB RAM spinning rust HDD powered netbooks which were inflicted on schools.

Well this is an outdated post I guess but I came here to find a solution to the exact same problem. I would like to comment on how much of an asshole some people were to the OP. It's not too much to expect a laptop to finish shutting down completely if that's what you asked it to do, regardless if the lid was closed after the command was given. It shouldn't matter what your "choose what closing the lid does" setting is because telling the computer to shut down should override everything, and closing the lid is a completely logical thing to expect a computer owner to do after they tell it to shut down.

This is just lack of imagination/common sense on the part of the computer designers. If there is no solution, fine, say so. If you DON'T KNOW if there is a solution or not just say that as well. But so many people just have to be dicks for no reason.

I think someone may have mentioned it on this post too but I did find the solution for me. I went to "Choose what closing the lid does." in power settings and I chose "do nothing". This seemed to fix the problem after testing a couple times.

I just received a laptop to use as my work pc. It is connected to a docking station and a Viewsonic monitor. The monitor is also connected with sound via the 3.5mm input from the docking station. What are the best settings to use for this. I do not want to turn off the unit each night when I leave & I don't want to have to go thru the startup process each morning when I come in. On my old desktop, all I had to do was it the "enter" key on the keyboard or move my mouse & it came to life. Can the laptop be setup to do the same? The laptop is a Dell Latitude E7470. I have already run into problems with no sound when the laptop wakes up from sleep. The only way to restore the sound is to restart. I set the laptop to hibernate earlier today, but I had to push the poser button on the docking station to wake it up, but I did have sound.
