Solved shutdown/startup

hello, my name is chris jones.

earlier today i set my system to shutdown. it did, although i remember thinking that it shutdown very very fast.

i went shopping.

2 hours later i turn my computer back on. After 3 seconds it switches off, no post screen. i tried again. 3 times until it started up. the machine didnt load past the post screen. it stopped at the press f1 to enter setup and f2 to load up defaults. Normally i press the del button to load bios if not it continues to load up.

I have ASUS core unlocker enabled normally it would say "6 cores unlocked". this time it said "this CPU Isnt compatibal with ASUS core unlocker". i went into bios disabled Asus core unlocker, saved an exited. This time it went through post screen auto to holding for input. After pot screen it said windows has recovered from a serious (i think it said serious) error, giving me the basic safe-mode variations or normal.

i am typing this post using that same system.

does anybody know what is happening?

Check your event viewer and see what it gives for that crash.

This happens when the PC has failed to post pressing F1. followed by F10 and enter is normally enough to clear this message if there is no major fault.

This is standard after windows has failed to shut down properly

does anybody know what is happening?

Not yet lol but I think it seems to be pointing to your CPU

hello all, i turned the machine off for 1 hour and it shutdown correctly and switched off only once. it loaded up correctly. event view says

'Kernel-Power' 'ID-41'. Basically the system prematurely shutdown. this tells me that im not seeing things. i am wondering what is causing this problem.

nope, not overclocking. but i am underclocking my ram to 1333 rather than 1600.

also, normally when i turn my system on the graphics card fan speeds up to high or very high. then after a few second to slows down to IDLE/LOW. Then the Post screen pops on the moniitor.

But now, when i turn on the system the graphics card fan speeds up to high or very high. then after a few seconds just as it should slow down the system switches off.

This sounds like normal behaviour

Not very helpfull the graphic card may not be the cause, did you get the clicking noises sorted out? I can only think that they could come from the fan. It would be worth trying to locate these noises as accurately as possible. maybe the power cable is coming into contact with the fan.

The other thing that is making me a problem is your mention of the core unlocker. Firstly I do not understand why it would need to be unlocked if you are not overclocking, secondly the warning that you received is not good. What is the standard setting for this?

I think it would be wise to recheck the seating of the CPU and Fan, also to test your RAM maybe try it a stick at a time.

Check the seating of your Graphic card and that the extra power cables are connected properly.

It may be wise to remove all these parts as if you are starting again.

What parts have you changed since you had your first problems?

I just had another thought, you mentioned underclocking the RAM. I would recommend setting it back to auto, if there is a problem caused by the CPU then the RAM should automatically default to the lower speed. this will cancel out the chance that you are the problem with a bad setting.

hello all, the new case i bought had an issue with it. when i attached the case interface jumpers to the motherboard

(correctly). a specific place on the outside of the case heated up so much it scoulded my hand. i tracked it down to

the 4-pin speaker jumper. the cable was extreamly hot, the connector itself slightly melted. all the case cables lead

to a black box just behind the on switch which also was extreamly hot. i unplugged the speaker cable and the heat

went away. i had hoped there was no residual damage.

random shut down issue:- playing witcher 1 for example. the psu would be very hot. i assumed it was broken after 4

years of solid use. but perhaps i plugged too many components into a single rail and it turned itself off because it

was under too much stress. i upgraded the psu and then i could play the game flawlessly. it still restarts whilst

extream web browsing (eg desktop wall paper site opened 10-15 pages all loading up hd res papers).

trouble starting up:- i got my old case and plugged in the power switch jumper and turned it on flawlessly. so im

assuming it wasnt just the speaker jumper that was faulty. atm i have unplugged all jumpers apart from power switch.

is this bad? is the case still grounded? is this issue degenerative? should i turn the machine off IMMEDIATLY and

never use it again? i believe the two issues are completely seperate.

fyi. the front panel has:-

- power switch FAULTY
- reset switch WORKS
- MIC UNTESTED
- Headphone WORKS
- 3 USB 2 2 WORK
- 1 USB 3 UNTESTED
- 1 Esata UNTESTED

the random click i thought may be a hdd dying.

can anybody give me some advise?

You do not attach cables to jumper plugs if you have then you have most probably damaged the motherboard.
To save confusion it may be helpful if you were to post a photo showing exactly where you have attached this cable.
If the case itself is getting hot I would suggest checking that the board is correctly installed. The MB attaches to the case wall via screws into brass standoffs which are screwed into the inside case wall if one of these brass standoffs is in the wrong position then it may well have caused a short circuit, which in turn would lead to heat and a damaged MB

nope not cables. the power switch, reset switch, hdd activity led, system warning speaker and power led. not to be confused with the usb cables or front panel audio ac'97.

its the System panel connector (20-8 pin panel).

the jumper cables/cords/wires lead from the individual buttons/led/usb sockets to a sealed black box. from there the cables/cords/wires all travel through canal/tunnel/bottle neck, along the case side. at that point the temperature was passing through the plastic and causing a 'hot spot' on the outside. see attached.

edit: the system warning speaker cable itself was quite hot

I think it would be wise not to use this case again, if you cannot see the extent of the damage, that plus the faulty power switch, I would recommend getting a new case.

just an update. i purchased the ANTEC 1200 V3 Ultimate Case. When i carefully removed the mb to the new case i noticed that there was a stray screw under the mb. possably fell behind there during the first construction. i replaced the silver looking standoffs with bronze looking ones. it works well so far.

just a small question, a screw behind the mb can cause a short? i assume terrable/degenerative damage is also caused? could one of these things cause the system warning speaker jumper plug to react differently? as in heat up and break?

Nice case It could possibly cause overheating yes, I would carefully inspect the board for damage (burn marks) and if it seems OK and as you say runs OK it maybe possible that you are lucky Time will tell.
If the system speaker is your only problem I would leave it disconnected, its a small price to pay when you could have lost the MB and maybe other hardware.
