Hey guys. My computer takes ages to restart. It shuts down fine and it starts up from the shut down fine but when I restart it, it takes ages on the 1st 2 screens - HP and starting windows. It's quicker to shut down and start than to restart? Any ideas?

Welcome to SF, TWardy.

Type msconfig at command prompt.

Go to startup tab.

Uncheck all EXCEPT anything from Microsoft.

Also, install and run Malwarebytes program.

Reboot and see if this helps.

You'll need to leave your AV (use free lightweight Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast for best performance) checked in msconfig>Startup. Check also in >Services tab after hiding all MS Services that everything except AV is unchecked.

Check optional Windows Updates for newer drivers. Look in Device manager for any drivers in error, and update your drivers.

Follow Lemur's suggestion to disinfect your System thoroughly.

Try Puran boot-time Defrag with a full Disk Check included. Puran Defrag Free Edition - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

If these fail check the logs and System Resources for clues working through these troubleshooting steps

Thanks guys

Do I still need it if I have Microsoft security essentials?

That and Superantispyware are scanners which find stuff that MSE might not find. MSE is a l'ight' AV program that I would not use. But if you are careful with your surfing habits, it will do.
