So Slow

u should have specified it was a nas. if u are directly accessing files from the nas and using them on the pc the wifi may be to blame for the lag. u should keep the files u wanna use local while u work with them and only in the nas for storage. its designed to hold files not work and open them up from it in real time. also a wired gigabit nas network would see better performance then a wifi

Thanks for all your advice.
My husband will try out your suggestions.
My concern is that our kids' PC, using the nas drive, but with XP has no time lag or problem with accessing, using and moving files sitting on the nas. Perhaps it will be the homegroup issue...fingers crossed.

Sadly, it wasn't the homegroup issue as we were already set up with workgroup.

I'm beginning to think that it will be easier to go back to XP....or just use the kids computer all the time:(

Hmmm go to:
Control panel > System > Device Manager > Network Adapters > right click Properties > Advanced tab
Scroll down to Speed & Duplex.... what is it set at? Some have luck with Auto-negotiate, others 100 mbps half duplex.

If you have a wireless card, same procedure, but look for Wireless Mode under Properties... what is that set at?

Also this might sound dumb, but bear with me.
Disable any firewalls and turn off any Anti-virus or malware detection programs running in the background (on both machines), then "test" your transfers again. Protection programs can slow file transfer due to packet inspection, if it runs faster, then possibly another protection program might be in order.
McAfee has been know to cause this.

Just thought of something else!
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off
Uncheck “Remote Differential Compression” click OK.
Restart computer, see if that helps with copying files.

P.S.
Just found this as suggested by a MS Tech:
"Go to command prompt and type:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
then hit enter."

Run command prompt as Admin (right click & select)

I apologise flooding you with suggestions, because I don't want you to give up on Win7. It really is an excellent operating system, again my apology.
I have been to your country, Sydney, Brisbane, Darwin and loved it, I''l be back someday.

We tried all your suggestions, but nothing seems to have changed.:(

We have observed that when we turn the computer off overnight and then log on again the next morning - everything is fine - in fact great - for about 5 minutes.

This morning I opened up a photo folder from the nas drive and the 10 thumbnails popped open straight away. I logged onto ebay and downloaded a picture in the blink of an eye, created the auction....and thought, what the heck, I'll live dangerously, I try another one!
But it was like the computer had just run a marathon and had had enough. It was pooped and said 'nuh, not going to do that again.'

The only good thing, is that I'm learning a lot more about the workings of a computer than I ever thought I would need!

I'm beginning to think it's the motherboard we have a problem with. Errors are increasing - it doesn't like the port the keyboard is in and we have to keep switching it. When on line pages will freeze for no apparent reason or it wont let me access some links of pages (one's that should not usually be blocked or off-limits).
The screen saver freezes nearly every single time (we thought it was just because it was pulling the photos off the nas drive, but now not so sure) and even though the computer is meant to shut down after a certain number of idle hours, it doesn't. And today everything is even slower than usual :-( It's painful.
It now seems to have trouble opening up images on many webpage...what is going on?

An hour later - just discovered that the computer is not automatically installing updates (even though it's set up to do this). So installed the 4 that were waiting....
