You could put them all in a large table with no borders.

Cheap and dirty...
Code:
<table border="2" bordercolor="#FF0000" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
 <td>
  <table border="2" bordercolor="#00FF00" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
   <td><caption>Hello</caption></td>
  </table>
 </td>
 <td>
  <table border="2" bordercolor="#0000FF" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
   <td><caption>World</caption></td>
  </table>
 </td>
 <td>
  <table border="2" bordercolor="#00FF00" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
   <td><caption>Again</caption></td>
  </table>
 </td>

</table>

You should be better off using DIV's and learning a bit of CSS instead.

Edit: Liquid you beat me to it!

another question
I have a four column table and I want one cell to occupy the entire row not just the first column (backround is blue so that the cell is visible)

Firstly, you've got some mad syntax and non-compliance going on there.
Second, a <TD colspan="4"> will make that cell span 4 col(umn)s.
Similarly, a <TD rowspan="2"> will make that row span 2 rows.

Code:
<html>
<body>
<TABLE BORDER="1" CELLPADDING="8" CELLSPACING="8" WIDTH="50%">
 <TR>
      <TH colspan="4">2007-2008 Season</TH>
 </TR>
 <TR>
    <TD>Game Date</TD>
    <TD>Kickoff</TD>
    <TD>Opponent</TD>
    <TD>Score</TD>
 </TR>
 <TR>
    <TH colspan="4">Preseason</TH>
 </TR>
 <TR>
    <TD>Fri 8/10/2007</TD>
    <TD>7:30 P.M.</TD>
    <TD>@ Buccaneers</TD>
    <TD>13-10 L</TD>
 </TR>
</TABLE>

</body>
</html>

What I've done there is nested the <TD>'s for easier readability.
Also note, <TD> and <TH> are essentially the same. <TH> (Table Header) bolds and centers the text inside. You could change these back to <TD>'s then apply your own formatting, if you want.

the syntax and non-compliance dont bother me b/c its not going up on the internet and its for a 101 class so it not a big deal
and thanks for the help it looks much better now

I was mostly refering to the two opening Table tags, and one closing table tag...
and the caption that wasnt in any TD.

Not a problem anyway, as long as you're learning something :thumbsup:

the two table tags are required because of the way i want it to show up
also this is only an excerpt of the whole code because i did not want to copy and paste the whole thing
you will see what i am talking about when i post the final product here
