That's what I would do. If there is no write operations in progress (which it should not a few seconds after the last write), then nothing can happen.

Thanks very much. It's not worth worrying about such a minor thing.

The next time I wipe the drive and reinstall Windows 7, the problem will not be there, I'm sure.

It's may be Window's Indexing. Right click on the drive and select Properties. See if indexing is set. If it is, uncheck it.

Nope, it was ticked so I unticked it, hit apply and OK and same thing.

Ok, one other place to look tomorrow.
Click the Orb and type INDEX, select Indexing Options. Toward the bottom of the window, click on Modify and see if the drive is checked there. Clear and save (OK).

The next thing to do is click on Advanced, then delete and rebuild the index.

Just a note: this computer that I am using at this moment is the i5 in my forum specs. The computer with the problem is an Intel G860 in another location.

The drive may be unchecked in the Modify screen but do the Delete and Rebuild anyway. I had the same problem on the drive shown above and I forgot about rebuild. Since the drive was indexed before, it's still in the index. When the drive is plugged in, Windows will try and update the index and holds the drive. You have to delete and rebuild the index so the drive is no longer in the index. The progress will be shown in the first Index Options window.

Heer's an interesting tidbit: my computer related to this one- same M/B, same CPU, same memory and same HDD has an external drive which has an on off switch. If I try to use the safely remove hardware process with it turned on, I get the same message as I do with the other one we are discussing here. Never tried that before.

I did what you suggested and went to "safely remove hardware" and got this message:
Safe to remove Device

Now I hope i can remember what I did.
