I have 2 e-machines, both bought about 2 years ago.
I have been using Sound Recorder in my machine (let's call it PC-1).

I can't find it in my wife's machine (let's call that PC-2).

When I look in WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 it is there, but when I double click on it I get the following:

It could be that feature is turned off, for whatever reason. Go to the Control Panel/Programs and then click on "Turn windows features on or off" and see if it is disabled in there.

Thanks for the idea, but there is no "Sound Recorder" in the features section. Also. all the "Media" items are ON.

Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel, Recording section. There should be a default recording device set. Usually it is the Stereo Mix and then any device such as microphone or line in will be recorded. If it is not shown, RIGHT click in an blank area in that panel then click to show disabled and disconnected devices. If the Stereo Mix shows up, enable it and then set it as default recording device.

As a side note to your problem, if you want to record audio from the internet, you need the Stereo Mix to be able to do that.

The Stereo Mix was disabled so I fixed that, but there is no Sound Recorder in the system. Searched all program files, etc.
FOUND IT, made a shortcut on the desktop. Now working OK. Thanks so much for your help.

Copy it over and see what happens.

I'm confused by the two screenshots you have. The second one with "An audio recording device could not be found" message would lead one to assume that there was no recording device (e.g. Stereo Mix), not that the program was corrupt.

I was confused, too. Once I enabled the Stereo Mix, it works OK now.

OK, so my assumption that there wasn't any recording device and enabling the Stereo Mix, as I suggested fixed it.

Great. Glad I could help.
