They were only 50/50 that they could do it, but ultimately what they have learned from it will help in the quest for reusable rockets so it's not that big of a loss.

Nasty crash, be nice to see one after they up the limit on the hydraulic fluid and whether or not Falcon can handle the barge undulations from being on the ocean.
The team knows it can land on solid ground, but landing on a moving target is a different challenge. That could be why the fluid was insufficient for the added thrust vectoring calculations, and that brings up the question of; Do they have sufficient computing power to handle those added calculations to keep the craft perpendicular to the barge?
Only time and testing will tell.
