Specific upgrade paths to get to all versions of Windows 10

In order to get windows 7 or windows 8, having a prior version will not help you. You have to pay for it.

In this context windows 10 is definitely free to a legitimate user.

You'll notice farther down in that link the following quote:

"What happens if I change my motherboard?

This will invalidate the Windows 10 upgrade license because it will no longer have a previous based qualifying license which is required for the free upgrade. You will then have to purchase a full retail Windows 10 license."

That quote appears under a reference to OEM, but it does not explicitly say that the quote is in reference to OEM only. That is, it does not explicitly say that if you have a retail 7 license and take the free upgrade to Win 10 retail, that you can then change motherboards and rebuild indefinitely just as you can now with a Windows 7 retail license. You can make that inference if you want to, but it is not explicit, leaving room for doubt.

Assuming the free upgrade to Win 10 retail does in fact allow you to change boards and rebuild at will, then the major remaining sticking points for me would be:

1: I've got 7 Home Premium retail. Am I willing to stay with 10 Home even though it apparently will give less control over Win 10 updates than 10 Pro would?

2: How exactly is a clean install to be done if you accept the "free upgrade" from Win 7 retail to Win 10 retail? Hoops to jump through, difficulty, restrictions, if any?

Some really nice information, John.

If I go to windows 10 from retail windows 7, will it continue the features of retail? That means, shall I be able to change the motherboard without losing the license?

Any confirmation about it will be great.

The way I read it is that the upgrade is per device, so if you changed mobo you need a new Windows 10 license, however imo if the upgrade 10 license is no longer valid then the Windows 7 retail should kick back in.

I haven't seen anything more detailed than this quote from a MS MVP "Community Moderator" at the link found in post 38 in this thread:

"If you upgrade from a retail version, it carries the rights of a retail version."

On the face of it and if taken literally, you could then change motherboards at will indefinitely, one machine at a time, into the future if you "free upgrade" from retail Win 7 to retail Win 10. Those are the rights of a retail Windows 7 license as it stands now.

I don't have the slightest idea if that quote can be taken literally.

"Free Upgrade" You will not be charged a fee to upgrade your current install to Windows 10. It's a free upgrade not free Windows.

OK, I was replying to your "I'm just skeptical of what a Retail Win 10 license will really mean." statement. I'm thinking the terms and conditions of the upgrade will be different from those for a bought off of the shelf version. The free upgrade could have an extra condition attached that the Retail bought online version doesn't. That's all. Don't read too much into what's been said about the upgrade version being locked into the one device. IMHO, even if that happens, it's not going to carry over into the Retail off the shelf version a consumer would buy for a new PC build. It will be like your Retail Windows 7 or 8 is now.

I agree, just because it's come from a moderator, I'm still wary of the bottom part of the statement. Even though at the top it states it will take on the rights of a retail version.

I too have an OEM copy of Win7 that I purchased for my build in 2012.
What I am planning to do is buy another HDD and clone my current Win7 to it and then Win10 upgrade that cloned copy and "test" it out, keeping my original Win7 intact. If I don't like it, I'll wipe the drive.

Yeah, these little dribs and drabs of info that leak out just create more questions on what it really means. And then there are those just keep trying to read things into it that aren't there. The pessimists make it all out as doom and gloom. For them free will never be free enough. :sarc:

I think what GabeAui means you need to upgrade to windows 10 first, then using you windows 10 key you could download the iso image using that recovery website. However, that would leave oem installs out in the cold because from what I read the keys to download a windows 7 image only works for retail and there has been other issues.
