Start Menu / Explorer lag (Resolved) :)

Hi again guys,

I shut down my PC last night, fine, everything was in working order, booted this morning to send some work to college and it took my start menu 30 seconds to load, then 30 seconds to load everything on the list in "All Programs" and then froze when I selected a file. I thought this was a bit weird so I decided to try explorer too, I waited for the start menu to load again and clicked "My Computer" - low and behold, the same thing happened, it lagged for about a minute and then loaded my disk drives etc...

I've run a virus scan with AVG, used Spybot S&D, Defragged with SmartDefrag, used CCleaner, Disk Cleanup, and chkdsk while also performing a diagnosis boot, but as of yet, have found nothing, & I've also used HD tune to check if my disks are faulty but they're all working fine, I have noooo idea what to do next as I don't want to re-install 7 as I'm right near my exams and trying to use my PC to revise and do work, apart from the fact that I've already had to re-install anyways.

Do you need any more info / can anyone help shed any more light on this situation?

Thanks!
Daniel

Download Process Explorer and on the next boot, see what's causing the delay

Also try Malwarebytes anti-malware. It picks up a lot of malware registry hacks. There could be something drastically increased the milliseconds delay on stuff opening. There's some menu delay setting someplace. That might be like 10 times the normal number.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I ran process explorer and nothing delayed the start up although I did notice that SearchIndexer + all of the sub executable's whacked up in memory usage when I hit "All Programs" but I rebuilt the index last night and it still does it, but I don't know how to check if it's damaged or not?

I also ran Malwarebytes & it picked up nothing :(

Is it only Start Menu that shows the delay?
What happens if you copy a shortcut to the desktop and double click it there?

I don't use start menu except maybe if I can't find the uninstall in the list of uninstallers.
I have folders with categorized shortcuts in RocketDock. But as I mentioned earlier, I think there's a setting in the Registry for the delay how long it takes system menus to open. Check the tutorials section for how to adjust it. It may have gotten set to an outrageously high number.

The start menu lags/freezes, windows asks if I want to re-start explorer.exe.
Explorer also lags/freezes but comes back without windows trying to restart it.

Double clicking anything (icons or open space) on the desktop makes explorer.exe hang for a while then it comes back, loading the program as usual... I'm pretty confused as to what it is :/

I've looked at what the start menu delay is set to and it's set to the default 400 so I don't think its that :(

Thanks again!
Daniel

Hello Daniel !!

Try this article and reboot the System in Selective Startup Run Selective Startup using System Configuration and see if that works fine. If that fails reboot in Safe Mode and see if that works. If that works then create a new User Profile and try under that account.

Hope this helps,
Captain

Hi Jack,

I tried that before and none of it worked unfortunately :(

I ended up performing and 'upgrade install' over my current install which seemed to fix the problem!

Thanks for all the help guys! :)
