startup repair doesn't help me

when I start my dell laptop it comes up with a window error recovery message with two options. first :h startup repair (recommended) and second start windows normally. When I click startup repair it go's to a startup repair screen saying searching for problems now the message says that this should only take a few minutes and that the computer may restart several times during the process But it does absolutly nothing at all but search for hours and hours I even left it on all night one time. Also if u click cancell the computer freezes. Now if u click start windows normally it acts as if its going to start than goes to a black screen again doing nothing for five minutes then goes back to the windows error recover screen. Please help what happened? or what can I do to fix the problem?

A Clean Install would probably be the quickest & neatest way of getting your computer up & working again.

Sooner or later, we all know that feeling ... you don't want to lose your files.

Do you have access to another computer, so you can download and burn a CD? You must, or we wouldn't be seeing your posts, here on the forum ...

Here is a link to Parted Magic, in the Wikipedia. From the wording of your post, I assume you're unfamiliar with this type of software ... there are a number of other Linux-based solutions to this problem. Basically, this will give you a functioning operating system, independent of MS Windows, that allows you to see and save your files.

Assuming your MS Windows installation is worth saving, it won't be damaged or even touched by Parted Magic.

Look to the bottom of the page for instructional links, including one to the Parted Magic home page. This should have a link to begin the download.

There are other Linux solutions, and I almost mentioned you could try it by booting a regular 'live' linux CD/DVD, but Parted Magic is faster for an emergency. If you already have such a 'bootable' disc containing a full distro, then go directly to that.

Here's hoping a 'live' Linux rescue operating system loads and runs, because if it doesn't, you could be having a hardware problem.

Once you have your files safe, you can get more aggressive. For example, you didn't mention trying a repair by booting directly from the original MS Windows installation disk?
