Solved startup repair

I'm having problems starting up after a virus problem. I booted up into Startup Repair with repair DVD, and it's been "Attempting Repairs" for quite some time. I am using windows 7.

I downloaded windows defender onto a usb. do i need the recovery dvd in too?

You should be able to just boot with the stick..

I put DVD in drive and it says "start up repair" ur computer was unable to start...start up repair is checking system for problems" my guess is that its not booting from dvd drive so I pressed F2 to change order and boot from cd/dvd drive. still not booting from dvd.

k thx. tried that. now it says Remove disks or other media. press any key to restart
when i remove usb and dvd, starts the start up repair again. uhhhhgggg!

maybe i didnt download the defender correctly. the file ext is "exe"

it's an exe, then you double clicked it and followed instructions on how to load it on to usb stick or burn it right?

yes. i downloaded the wrong defender. needed 64 not 32
i also have AVG on my lap top, someone told me that it could be the cause of problem.
I have a TON of viruses.
im scanning pc with windows defender right now.

windows defender quartined 1 virus- troganOS/alureon.E (had error so wouldnt remove it), and removed other virus. pc still won't boot properly.???

Ok good, do a scan one more time, then you need to follow these instructions if you can 't boot into windows in either safe mode nor normal mode and startup repair doesn't work.

Actually you mentioned startup repair doesn't work, however is this the startup repair from the win 7 DVD that you are running? If not, first boot with the DVD then run startup repair to see if you can get to at least boot to win 7. If startup repair does not fix the problem follow these instruction:

after that runs, try startup repair from DVD again.
If still doesn't work, then do chkdsk /r from the command prompt in the recovery environment.

And if that STILL doesn't work, you may be running out of options other than repair install or clean reinstall

ok. Thank you so much for all ur help. I did a quick scan with defender and the trogan DOS and Adware Win32/gamevance(removed). wouldnt remove the trogan DOS, but now I am doing a full scan.. start up repair runs forever and does nothing the last time i tried to reboot pc. ssay windows cannot start and asks if i want to restore. restore rums forever also. so i will try ur suggestion about SFC if I cannot resolve issue. Hi Jennifer -

Work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot.

By the time you've done them all you'll know you have done everything you can to rescue your install, then copy out your data and run Factory Recovery or Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 .

Hi peeps I'm new to this site and I dont have a clue how to make a new forum post and this thread is titled similar to my problem.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (Acer Aspire AX3300 Desktop)
I have had this around 2 years now and never had any problems with it but recently its been a nightmare!

I was having trouble with Google Chrome to begin with, everytime my computer booted up and I logged on, an error messsage appeared telling me to reinstall chrome; because of this reoccuring error I decided to reboot my system from scratch using Acer eRecovery Management. I wiped the whole hard drive, like it was a new pc.

Now that it has been restarted I'm slowly regretting it...now its been restarted, every time i start up the pc i get "Launch Startup Repair", so i launch it, and then tells me after around half an hour that windows could not be repaired, then it shuts down; then when it starts back up its fine...but after ive finished whatever im doing and want to shut down, the screen stays on "Shutting Down" until you get to the point of just taking out the power cord;

Sometimes when it boots up its just a black screen but the power is on, other times its startup repair.

I've had a few sleepless nights this week trying to fix it by reading various forums etc but nothing seems to be working...I tried taking steps of various tutorials on YouTube and on this site but nothing I do seems to be working.

I tried "HOW TO RECOVER FROM AN INFINITELY LOOPING STARTUP REPAIR LOOP WITHOUT REINSTALLING WINDOWS" tutorial published by 'Dzomlija" which was posted on this site; I followed all instructions but nothing worked.

I have also entered information into CMD and windows is telling me that my registry is 0mb!!!

I don't understand why, my pc has just been restarted, there is not even a picture saved to my files and nothing has been installed except Avast antivirus and Google Chrome.....

I quite often get the BSOD too...but thats easily fixed, I just want to get this startup repair thing to stop happening first, CAN ANYBODY HELP ME PLEASE?

Most tech enthusiasts will not run the preinstalled factory bloatware install or Recovery but instead choose to get a vastly superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Everything you need is in the link.

If you want to troubleshoot the corrupt bloatware Recovery then please post back a screenshot of your maxmized Disk Mgmt drive map with listings, using Snipping Tool in Start Menu.

Then begin working through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 starting with a Clean Boot to turn off all of the freeloaders starting up on Win7's back.

I'd also recommend Firefox or IE9 rather than running any installed Google spyware. Use the stable Google search box in the browser and stay signed out of Google sites to avoid pernicious spying and pasting interest ads everywhere you go.

havent messed with laptop in a couple weeks. started it up and of course wont load windows but I do not have anything in the DVD drive this time and im at a screen that says "choose a recovery tool" so I did a system restore back to Feb. 2012 (I know that its older and not recommended but the virus wasnt on laptop at that date.) well my question is how long does a system restore take, right now theres a box that says "system restore--restoring files" a blue/black bar is going side to side. its been doing this for about 35 minutes. any help would be appreicated

Hi Jennifer - Just caught this. Did SysRestore complete? Try it from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html on the DVD or Repair CD since the tools which autostart could be infected.

It's entirely possible the infection is in your restore points. But you can try anyway.
