Hiya,

I was playing Skyrim this morning and got the BSOD so rebooted and got it again while windows was loading drivers after logging in. Rebooted again and got the same thing. So I went into safe mode and it didn't do it. I assumed it was a bad driver so stopped worrying and went to work.

Didn't have time to look into it so today I got home and went straight into safe mode with networking and im getting the same problem but it seems to happen randomly while in safe mode. Like for instance it just did it while I was writing the thread title here.

It tends to do it when I open a new firefox tab or use my roboform filler or something but I don't think it has anything to do with Firefox..

I fear that it is bad memory/modules because I booted into my OLD OS that I still keep on dual boot and it did it also when loading drivers after login. Same Stop Error "0x0000001A".

However that OS is from different hardware so its not reliable, but I doubt its just a coincidence because I have loaded into that OS a few times without problems.

You will find a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA in the dumps which happened today randomly in Safe Mode.

I have memtest but obviously reluctant to use it right now because it will prevent me from being on here to see replies.

I would go pull out the memory but with 4 sticks its gunna be a bitch to trial and error that way.. testing each stick and each module. I don't really have space in my room to do it easily so I need to disconnect/pull out everything and lift the huge thing up each time.

Needless to say I would like your input before I start doing that..

Here is the archive with my dumps and I was going to post the dump from the other OS as well but for some reason it didn't make one. But if anyone thinks that would be helpful I will go back and make sure it dumps one.

I used 7zip with high compression settings using over 12gb RAM in order to give my memory a bit of a test and gladly didn't get a BSOD so I remain optimistic! Then found out your forum doesn't accept .7z >.<

Was gunna post the latest dump just now but windows is taking far too long to load up "Computer" so gunna just post this before another BS hits.

Ok so had a look at your dump files, noticed two things most of your crashes are either 1A or 50 both of which can be caused by either bad ram or a device driver acting up, hoping it is the latter and not the former. Second I was looking through some of your installed drivers and noticed your raid driver is a known causer of BSODs, or rthater the version you have installed of it is so right of the bat please update it from Here

now the next thing that comes to mind is if that doesn't seem to rid you of the problem please enable driver verifier and let it run until your next BSOD and when that occurs post back your new dump files. here is a tutorial on enabling Driver verifier:

Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

WARNING!: If you enable driver verifier and can not boot normally into windows please boot into safe mode and then follow the steps to disable Driver verifier

If Driver verifier runs for 24 hours and does not produce a crash or should you crash and we are still not bale to identify the cause I would like you to try running Memtest86+ for at least 8 passes if not more (tip: let it run over night). Please see this tutorial for how to run memtest86+:

Hey Dsprague, just saw your post after I followed up to my own below..

I will try the verifier but can't in normal mode because I get the BSOD within a few mins without fail in normal windows.
Will it be effective in safe mode??

In the past I have used this program sometimes http://hcidesign.com/memtest/
I know this isn't memtest86 but atleast I can post/research while its running. dunno how good it is under windows but it can't hurt..

when you say upload the dumps, do you mean "Grab All" again or just the dumps from Driver Verifier?

Starting to think it could be my SSD.. gunna try unplugging it and load up my other OS. Had a few strange problems with the SSD in the past where it wasn't detectable on boot until I turned the PC off and disconnected the SATA cable then re-attached. But this happened only twice since I built the PC back in August. I should probably have RMA'd it but it works fine apart from those 2 strange occurrences and I assumed it was a firmware problem or possibly static build up..

You should too check to see if there is a firmware update if you have been having problems with your SSD it is important to keep the firmware up to date. you can check This site to update yours

Yeah I was waiting for one to come out but stopped checking after a while.. I will have to see what the current firmware version is.

Also about the raid driver.. Western Digital? Are you referring to my external WD MyBooks which I have linked through a Belkin Network Hub?

Also just remembered that today when I turned on the PC, the POST screen said my overclock was bad and I should check BIOS settings. But I have not overclocked the PC. I thought maybe it could have been because the room temperature was close to 0c and the CPU just wasn't warm enough.. is that possible?

Oh I need to know is there any point running the Verifier in safe mode only? Is it gunna work properly?

The CPU being colder should make it run better not the other way around and Yes i am sure about the WD Driver it is listed in your drivers:

And to respond to your question about memetest, let the memtest86+ run over night when your not using the pc

it will not be effective in safe mode, it is supposed to cause the crashes the way you describes, which indicates to me that you should upload the new dump files the way you did with your old files on your first post

I can't stay in normal mode for more than 1-2 mins without a BSOD.

WD driver - I think that is from the old OS.. I don't have any WD software installed on my new one.
But I found the driver you mean, it is part of SmartWare Drive Manager which was on my old install.

Since I can't run the Verifier, I think the next step is to run memtest86.. but before I do that I am gunna check to see if its somehow overclocked itself.. which would be extremely weird since I was in Skyrim for a few hours before the first BSOD so if any overclock happened, I will be very surprised.

Heh maybe there is a virus that does such things..

I'll be able to post on my phone during memtest so feel free to add anything else you may think of.

At this point instead of hoping its a driver issue, I am hoping its the memory and not the module(s).

I really don't need the hassle of sending back the motherboard right now

Also, I had to update my forum specs because I wrongly put my motherboard down as fx550 instead of fx990. Just for future reference.

Ok running memtest86 and getting lots of red errors.. Is there a way to determine from here which stick/module is faulting?
Also is there much point letting the test finish? Should i just go straight to pulling them out and testing one stick at a time? How long should i test for per stick?

Update: first pass after about 2 hours found over 47000 errors.. Not even sure how that is possible.. How can the memory be that messed up and go from perfect to destroyed so quickly?

Surely windows wouldnt even boot if it was that bad?

So i thought to load bios optimized defaults and there are no errors after 20 mins while last time had hundreds of them within 3 minutes.

Im probably just wishful thinking that it was all been some weird bios glitch but ill see what happens after another pass..

Any thoughts?

I'm slightly confused, you changed a setting in the bios and the memory errors stopped?

The 1st test reported hundreds of errors within 3 minutes.

The 2nd test didnt report anything until well into the 3rd hour..

I even managed to boot up into normal windows and watch netflix for afew hours after loading bios defaults.


However the memory is clearly still bad and I think the results are different because the clock setting is now on auto instead of forced 1600mhz like it was so its not as strict timings and therefore less problems.

Im gunna take out 1 module at a time and run memtest.. But I think ill set the clock back to 1600 so that it doesnt take 3 hours to find out the result.

I am really annoyed because i bought the motherboard/cpu/memory as a bundle and they said i have to send the whole lot back for a refund as they dont have it in stock anymore.

I think its bs and they're just hoping I replace thr memory myself >.<

too if you could test all the memory slots on the mother board with each stick individualy to see if its all the memory that's bad or if its the memory slots on the motherboard.

Yeah I will do that second.. I will also test all modules in my other PC which is also DDR3. Might take me a few days to get it all tested properly but I will post back when I know more.

Hi again.. as all the memtest errors said they were after 12GB I took the 4th module out as the 4th module would be over 12GB and started testing again.
I am not sure if my logic was accurate or I was just lucky but its been about 5 hours now and not a single error so I will leave it running over night and then tomorrow I will put the removed stick in my other DDR3 PC. Hopefully the stick is to blame and not the slot. I will also test the slot too just on the off chance it could be both the stick AND the slot.

SO hopefully I will be able to get my PC back by tomorrow..

Yeah it was a bit of a nightmare at first because they wanted me to send the entire bundle back just because one memory stick was faulty so I argued with them in email for about 2 weeks before they finally gave in and sourced me replacement memory.
Bit of a ridiculous policy.. they shouldn't be selling self build bundles if they can't offer support for individual components.
But anyway its sorted now.. I Might just sell the memory and buy some with smaller heatsinks so I can eventually OC my CPU but for now im happy.
